NIkon question

->> does anyone know the cause of this: the red focusing areas (while looking thru the camera) look like a pinball machine. They go around and around, even when the camera is in the locked position making it impossible to focus.
This is on my my D2X. It has about 200k shutter actuations so here is my other question-if I send it in, do I have them alsoo repair the shutter NOW? Or is this something "minor" (haha, yea right) |

->> Debbie has the camera gotten wet or VERY damp? It sounds like the contacts under the selector are shorting, if the selector is locked that would mean that either the lock is worn/broken or something conductive is between the switch pads under the selector. Nothing at NPS is 'simple' but by the same token I'd be hard pressed to pay for a shutter before I had to.
It's also a tough call knowing how much you love that camera ;) Given that I know that you will still be holding that D2X near and dear to your heart when the D4 comes out, ask them to estimate the cost to replace the shutter while it's in the shop. One of the benefits of having it done now is that you can schedule and plan for the 'down time' and not have it impact your work schedule when the thing does die at a concert or something. |

->> Eric,
I baby this camera in a major way as it is the best one I have had-it has never gotten wet or damp. A little while ago the selector didnt work at all and someone suggested I spray some canne dair on it and once I did that-all worked fine. This just started out of the blue-where the sensor is like a pinball machine.
If they replace the shutter, do you kno wif it sets all the functions back to factory default?
Debbie
PS-I am in no rush to get the D3 or D300 because I love this camera so much. My D2Xs has been virtually sitting in the box feeling unloved:) |

->> Can a camera feel?
Well perhaps my Leicas can, but a Nikon? My Nikons show no interest in being loved. Use me, work me - they scream, but love me. NO.
You can ask Nikon NOT to reset the camera to factory default if you don't want them too. Doesn't mean they'll listen.
Have you tried taking the battery out for a few minutes, and then reinserting it. Then check to see if the camera is no longer a pinball wizard. Does this happen with all your lenses, or just one? |

->> HI Walter,
I took the battery out and waited. put it back in and the "pinball wizard" was stil l happening. It happens with all the lenses used too.
Bummer!

->> Debbie,
I can't remember on my D2x but on my D2Xs I saved the settings to a CF card before sending it. When it came back I just loading my settings back in to the camera. You could ask that they do this for you, it could happen.
P.S. You've got mail. |

->> Hi Debbie,
This is just a suggestion -- worth perhaps what you're paying for it (nothing :) ). I admit it's just a guess but it's what I would try on my D2X: You know how you can select which point of focus to use? I would try going through the motions of changing to a different one, and see if that process somehow interrupts the cycle of flashing focus points.

->> Hi Shelley,
I tried that and it won't evenlet me change the focusing point. It seems to go where it wants--even when it is on a locked position.
I just hope this isn't the "beginning of the end" of this camera. Like I said, it has over 200k shutter actuations |

| ->> Keep bashing your camera around a bit, it should eventually TILT and stop the pinball lighting. |

->> Debra, what is the focus area set to? Sounds like the camera may be set to area focus instead of single point... My D2H searches a bit more for a suitable focus point when set up this way. I'm sure this didn't slip by you, but it was my only suggestion not involving NPS.
