Unsupported Format Variant - aka I'm GONNA EXPLODE

->> I had to run an Image Rescue the other day on a card that I was having some trouble with. I managed to rescue around 1200 images, some were way too old, and others were just the ones I need. The majority of the ons that I needed come up with this error message in PhotoMechanic: Unsupported Format Variant. WTF??? I am going insane here. Can anyone help. The images do not load in Preview, Safari, Photoshop, etc.....

help

->> When I would run Image Rescue on files in Windows, I would have to change the extension from .thm to .jpg in order to load the files.

Not sure about Mac, but maybe this will spark an idea...

->> I searched the web and came across this on PM's site, from one of the software engineers. "I think the issue is that some of your PSD files are higher resolution than QuickTime is capable of handling. QuickTime actually crashes Photo Mechanic under this condition so we added code in 4.5.1.1 to mark images that would otherwise cause crashes to be reported as an unsupported format variant. It's either that or a guaranteed crash."

You aren't using PSD files but possibly there is some quirk in quicktime or some other program related to the files rescued and their format. Some driver missing or other program interfering?

->> I've had little luck with Image Rescue - have you tried Photo Rescue - haven't had to use it for awhile but it's worked wonders for me, it was well worth the $29:

->> Ramsay, I too have had problems with the same error. Just from downloading a card in to my new iMac. Does not happen a lot, but have not been able to narrow it down to anything specific like a card, or the computer, or the Photo Mechanic program.

I have PM 4.5.2 and my iMac 5,1 is an Intel core 2 duo.

I have actually been able to save a few of these by dragging them to my desktop and opening them direct to Photoshop.

I don't have an answer for you, but you are not alone with this problem and I do not think it had anything to do with the Image Rescue.

Let us know if you find anything
Ron

->> Photo Rescue works (IMO) better than the other recovery software programs.

It saves the file back to its original format (ie, tiff, jpeg or raw) and does not convert it to an 8 bit tiff like others do.

Photo Rescue saved me once when a card accidentally got pulled from a reader while downloading. Photo Rescue recovered and saved every file in the original format. This was after using Image Rescue and not having the images viewable in Photo Mechanic or Aperture.

I second Nhat's thoughts.

Photo Rescue is must-have software.

->> I couldn't agree more, Photo Rescue saved me too. After the Super Bowl in Houston a few years ago, I had a card that was corrupted.

Photo Rescue pulled all of the original images back so that I could edit and transmit, not having lost one image.

->> I must have gotten the programs mixed up.... because all of my files are .jpg, and were not converted into 8 bit tiff's. So, it was most likely PhotoRescue - I can check when I go back into work. Crapola

->> Same thing happened to two fellow staff photographers. Half the assignment had gray vertical bars across the images. Last half of take read "unsupported format variant." Had no idea if the problem lay in camera, cards, card reader, computer or software until the photographer called Photo Mechanic for an update and Bob knew exactly what it was. "NEVER, NEVER chimp from the back of the camera." You can review pictures but don't delete in camera. All the info doesn't get erased and it can cause this problem. That simple.
