another great PC to Mac set of questions
Carl Auer, Photographer

->> It is getting time for me to upgrade my old laptop and I have almost settled on making the jump from PC to Mac. For the time being, I would keep my PC Desktop until I had the budget to start looking at Mac stuff there, but for my laptop, I think that would be the easiest way to start the migration.

I have all but decided on a 15" MBP, but was wondering if anybody had bought from the Apple Refurbished section on apple.com? You are looking at some pretty nice discounts there, but was curious if people were satisfied buying a refurb unit.

My second question is software related. One of the reasons I want to switch to Mac is I am tired of Windows. I have had my share of blue screens and other Windows quirks, and after playing around with my sisters Vista laptop, I can honestly say I am not too impressed. My two main programs I use on the road with my laptop are PhotoMechanic and Photoshop CS2. I intend to use Apple Aperture, but have been planning on upgrading CS2 to CS3 with whatever laptop I got (Windows or Mac) and my question is, and it may have been asked but I could not find any threads on it, since I have a full version of CS2 for PC, can I just get the upgrade for CS3 for Mac? Common sense tells me no, but it will increase the budget I have set aside for the switch if I have to go buy the full version again. It could realistically cause me to go with a MacBook over a MB Pro if I have to tack on a extra $600 for another full version of Photoshop.

And, if this has been asked over and over before, I apologize for repeating what is probably a stupid question.
Thanks

->> Carl,

I made the switch about 2 months ago.

You do not need to BUY the full version. Call Adobe and tell them you want to do a "Cross-Platform Upgrade." Be sure to have your serial number handy. They will take down some info and direct you to a link to print out a form, complete it, and fax it back to them. It's your promise to uninstall and destroy your Windows version. They will then assist you in purchasing the full version for Mac, but at the upgrade price.

Kevin

->> The refurbs are a good deal, I've been involved in a couple of transactions involving them.. Be sure to spend the money and buy Applecare before the end of the year warranty. It's worth it.

Dunno what you plan to use Aperture for, but if you aren't using Photo Mechanic to browse, you might consider it.

->> If you are a member of NPPA, they have a professional program deal with Apple that provides about a $200 discount on a Macbook Pro. The refurb deals are good though, but if you aren't a member of NPPA, it might be worthwhile to become one for that benefit alone.

I'm almost certain that PhotoMechanic's license number is cross-platform already, so all you need to do is download the mac version from their website and put in the code you have now. You can go to www.camerabits.com and check the forums there though just to make sure.

->> FWIW, I just bought a 15" Macbook Pro after being Windows for years. I still have a PC desktop and so I needed to run Photomechanic on the desktop and the MB Pro. I talked to Camerabits and it was no problem. The same license works on both platforms. Cool!

->> Carl - Gray Quetti followed my advice about a month ago (probably a negative testimony on his common sense...) and switched to a set of Mac's - a MacBook Pro for himself, a MacBook for his wife and an iMac for the home, I believe.

I think Gray is covering the Jaguars game tonight, but he checks this board frequently, and may weigh in with this thoughts tomorrow.

I know he was able to use his Windows license for PhotoMechanic, as John reported. I think he bought a new version of PS CS3, though.

->> Carl,

You will not be disappointed switching, I switched a few years back when my wife started attending college again, we used her college discount :).. since than we no longer have windows machines at home.. Looks like someone already answered the photoshop upgrade I called them and it was pretty easy to upgrade to mac from pc and they switched my serial activation for me as well.

Also we bought a refurbished mac laptop for my son from apple.com with apple care and havent had any problems with the machine, its been about 2 years now with that laptop.

Have fun with your new mac...

->> Carl, SWITCH! I was a PC guy, and not a good one either, and I just switched over about a month ago. I had some friendly help from Dennis W. and now I can't imagine ever going back. I didn't know about getting the upgrade on PS3 and ended up buying Lightroom and PS3 in a package through NAPP. Photo Mechanic let me switch over without cost. I suggest the Mac Book Pro for all the reasons stated in this and other threads. I even switched my desktop and my wife's laptop. We're one big Mac family now.
