->> Anyone else having a problem with the new 1D Mark III and error ERROR 99
The error occurs on clicking the shutter with or without a lens attached, and a prompt appears on the back screen declaring error 99 and asking the you turn the camera on and off and reset the battery.
I saw in a previous post Alex Menendez had the problem and took it to Canon,
did canon say what the problem was? |

->> There has been some chatter about this particular error on some forums, but I put little or no credence to these reports, considering the source. Now that it's happening to a SS Member, it's a different story. Isn't error99 a problem of communication between the Lens and the Body??
Does it happen all the time?? Or does it happen sporadically??
Your best bet is to take it or send it to your nearest Canon repair center.

->> I've had the same problem happen 2 or 3 times. Turning it off and on got it back on track. Didn't make me happy though, with such a spendy, new camera.

->> IT IS NOT THE NORMAL PROBLEM OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE LENS AND BODY CONTACTS!!!
The "inner parts" NEED TO BE TOTALLY REPLACED and the only way is to send it to CPS.
I was at the Formula1 race in Indy 2 weeks ago and walked directly to the CANON office that was located under the bleachers where CPS members get their free goodies and camera parts. The tech there told me he couldn't even look at it and it had to be sent in, he knew that there was a problem as soon as I opened my mouth, after telling him of my frustrations at spending $4600 on a NEW camera, I slowly walked away.
I contacted CPS, sent the camera in FedEx, $135.00 (how about a free replacement battery or something for the money eh Canon?) and to be honest, I got the camera back with new "guts" and about 10 shutter actuations.
I was not told what the problem was but it does seem to be in working order as of today. -I have only shot about 200 shots with it on full 10fps blasts of about 40 shots- I just got back from out of town and with thouroughly test it before the Daytona 400 race this upcoming week.
I will also be testing the focus problems this week and can hopefully get that dialed in.
ERROR 99 will not be fixed by cleaning anything, you have to send it in and the sooner the better.

->> Just for the record, my ERROR99 began in Miami shooting 2 soccer matches in the humidity, a 7p.m. and a 9p.m. game. It happened about 15 times and lost the shots that it took, they never got captured to the card. On some occasions, I would be following the action, lose focus and then snap back into focus, when I pressed the trigger the camera would lock up completely and not take any shots.
I swapped cards, using 3 brands and swapped lenses-400,70-200, 20.
The errror kept occuring.
At the Formula1 race, I again used different cards but only shot the 70-200 lens.
I had to literally shut the camera on and off 60 times in OneDay. In fact I got pretty good at shooting, letting the card capture the image, shut the camera off and then refocus on the next wave of racecars. My capture rate at this point went up to about 40% before getting the ERROR again. For every ten times I tried to take a picure, I actually captured 4.
I sent the camera in and got the same camera body back but the guts seem to be new, at least they work now. Canon did a GREAT job of getting me the camera back in less than a week but I do have that sick feeling that something else might go wrong soon. I will be shooting the main images this weekend at the NASCAR race on my markII with the markIII as a BACKUP!
Keep me posted on other ERROR99's please.

->> Alex, thanks for the info!!
I wasn't 100% sure that the ERROR99 was a communication problem or not. I keep hearing these problems and I keep thinking that I'm going to stick to my MKIIn for a little longer.
I hope that the repaired camera works good for you at NASCAR and please keep us posted on the ERROR99 and the Focus performance too. I would like to know how it performs tracking at NASCAR.
Thanks
