->> hello sportsshooters,
i use iview media pro 3 instead of photo mechanic and am being offered a free upgrade to expressions media (iview were bought by microsoft last year).
have any of you taken the plunge ? what's it like ?
i'm loathe to upgrade to a *gasp* microsoft product on my mac if it's not an improvement over media pro 3.
cheers,

->> I've upgraded.
I'm sure there are some differences.
Frankly the only thing I've noticed is the opening splash image Microsoft put on the start up of a model with very tight slacks with her back to the camera reaching for something.
As if that's to inspire photography?
If you want to stick with the product, you have to upgrade to stay in the loop for future upgrades. I got iView a while ago, but frankly don't use it much anymore. |

Walter's pretty much right, besides the splash screen, the other differences seem to be cosmetic too. The new one is not what I'd consider an improvement, it's like they only changed some buttons and the interface colors.
I've got catalogs with thousands of images in them, and the IPTC keyword entry and ability to sift through photos quickly is a lot better in iView Pro than I've found in other apps. I also like the fact that I can grab a catalog, or quickly build one by searching through years-worth of older ones, and stick it on a drive and show full-screen previews of images without needing to take the originals.
I used PhotoMechanic for years, and also use Lightroom for my editing workflow, and used to dabble with Cumulus, and IMO, iView Pro is the best for keyword entry and managing big libraries. It's not the most stable - it'll go into la-la land occasionally for five minutes or so, but I haven't found a better cataloger.
As far as Microsoft buying it... well, it could be a good or bad thing - that remains to be seen. So far the interface change is blah and without new capabilities there's nothing to recommend the upgrade except to put us in line for the future revs. I figured I'd do the upgrade and give them the benefit of the doubt. |

->> One thing I've noticed (I think) - it'll read MkIII RAW files, where I don't think IView does. How's that?
Another is that it'll crash if you try to run your old .vbs scripts, haven't solved that one just yet. Drag.
Other than that, new logos, same old software (more or less)...
