->> Okay, I know we've talked a little about shading ourselves while shooting, but I was surfing another forum and found this very interesting image showing how someone attached an umbrella to a monopod for shade. http://www.openphotographyforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=951 Since summer is here and many of us are in the sun all day, I would like to get your thoughts on this.
Thanks!

->> I've used that set-up at some HS football games a long time ago when it was raining..
The one hitch for such a set-up is whether sports venues would allow an umbrella in the photo area--be it the sidelines or a photo well.. |

->> Imagine the fun if a gust of wind suddenly hit.
Wind hits umbrella, umbrella pulls monopod, monopod pulls camera and lens from photographer's hands onto field, photographer freaks and runs onto the field....
Or, here in the southwest, imagine if a big dust devil hits... the umbrella sails into the air along with the monopod.
I think you'd do better going to a hiking store and looking at hats with a soft wide brim and good air flow. Also, look into the long-sleeve shirts they make for sun-protection. They're light, wick perspiration, and keep the sun off your arms. It's better to keep the sun off you entirely than to rely on sun-blocking lotions, but I wouldn't go the umbrella route. |

->> I've done something like that myself. I use it in the rain. I attach two Bogan clamps together with a double hex-head piece they make. One clamps to the monopod just below the pad and the other holds the standard golf umbrella. Wind can be a problem but the vents on the top of the umbrella help somewhat. That setup helps keep me dry along with the big glass. As was pointed out, it's not easy to mve around but I stay out of the way on the sideline and it's been a non-issue as far as interference.
Secondly, I use one clamp with a small ball head attached. I fit a Flash to the ball head and connect it to the camera's hot shoe via and "off shoe" cord. I use that setup mostly for night soccer and football. |

| ->> crap! did I read something wrong again? someone slap me please....anyway I have a WAY better idea....so when you're at a venue that actually allows umbrellas (good luck to you on that btw) you go into the stands and grab some kid, fan whatever and say..."hey buddy...wanna watch the game from the SIDELINE?" well come on down...hold this here umbrelly over me while it's raining and you can be an official "PHOTOGRAPHERS ASSISTANT"!!! and it will only cost you $10 for the priviledge to help me out. why pay money when you can make money? 8) |

->> Just buy a Tilley hat...great shade/UV protection, and it's waterproof too. Wore mine at the Stagg Bowl last weekend (4 hours of freezing rain) and it kept me dry even though I have the mesh version (http://tinyurl.com/2zvusw).
Plus it's a heck of a lot more stylish than an umbrella clamped to your monopod. :) |

->> Judy and the rest of the SportsShooter members,
Check out what fellow SS member Baron Sekiya has devised. I've been using this set up for about 3 years and it works really great. All you need is a golf umbrella, two bogen clamps, a monopod, the bogen stud (if you don't have one, I've used small screws with nylon nuts to fasten the two clamps together) and your good to go. Good luck!
Happy Holidays to everyone!
aloha,
Aaron

A:
Because a bunch of pros at umbrellaholders.com will slam him because he should have charged at least $100 for the gig, and he's ruining the sports-shooter-umbrella-holder-upper industry. |

->> Mahalo for the promo Aaron. Some folks have asked why I have a ball-head on my monopod, I don't always use one on there but it does make it easier to run around the field for jube shots and stuff with my other camera when I have the big glass slung on my shoulder with the ball-head loosened so the pod hangs next to the lens.
I let the stats kids take cover under my umbrella too when it's raining hard and they need to write stuff down, they just have to chase me a little when I move. And yeah, for windy days the umbrella system doesn't work (nor for pro sports where it would be forbidden) but I'm working on a little project that should kinda solve the windy sideways rain problem while shooting. Still in the prototype stage. |
