Need Camera Rental - Chicao: 1D MkIIn Shutter Failure
Dennis Wierzbicki, Photographer

->> My 8 month old 1D Mk IIn apparently suffered shutter failure yesterday while covering a youth baseball event. All the images have an irregularly-shaped, bright oblong streak going across approximately 80% of the of the horizontal width of the image.

According to the actuation counter, I only have 29,000 actuations on this body. Seems an AWFUL low number of shutter activations to experience a failure for a pro piece of hardware, but from a little research, this isn't unheard of.

My question: does anyone know of anywhere I can borrow or rent a 1D MkII or MkIIn in the Chicago area for the approximately one week it'll take CPS to repair mine? I had to use my back-up 20D for the second half of the day yesterday, and I can't see the 20D being capable of handing several gigs I have scheduled this week. Having to use the 20D full-time yesterday made me TRULY appreciate how much better the MkIIn is than the prosumer bodies. It ain't even close.

Anyone?

CPS has an office out in the burbs, too. Have you contacted them yet? They've always been super nice.

Any idea where this is or what their number might be? I know there is a building with "Canon" on it off 290 and 355, but not sure if this it. Would CPS automatically refer me there when I call them tomorrow?

Not having to FedEx it to NJ would be great.

Thanks also for the reminder about Calumet. I've dealt with them in Bensenville, so I can call them when they open in the AM. IIRC, they require a 100% MSRP deposit (ouch!).

->> You will have to send it to NJ. The Chicago facility only repairs point-n-shots and other consumer grad cameras. The shutter replacement is about $295. That's what I was charged when mine blew at 85K.

->> Dennis,
Calumet will just take an imprint of a credit card. They don't charge you the full amount. The here in Southern California is that way at least.

->> All,

Thanks. I'll call CPS tomorrow to see what they say.

I heard from one local shooter that Calumet requires proof of business insurance before renting, which was news. If I can't find a shooter to loan/rent me the body, and Calumet doesn't work, I'll try Helix.

I shot an MLS game tonight with my 20D - man, what a struggle.

Also heard that CPS Chicago may have loaners, so I'll contact them.

->> Maybe Calumet requires that if you're renting high dollar equipment, I don't know. But when I rented a nikon 80-200mm (~$800 new) they just took an imprint of my credit card). They didn't take any money off of it or put a hold. It wouldn't have worked if they did since there was only about $50 left :-X

good luck

->> A follow-up: I found a local shooter who is going to rent me his MkIIn for the next few days.

FWIW, I left messages and sent emails to both of the local (Chicago) CPS reps and never heard back from either of them. I just left it that I was looking for a little help. You'd have thought one of them would have at least had the common courtesy to return my email or voice mail, even if it was to say "sorry, can't help you", but that's the subject of another thread...

Talked with CPS NJ and overnighted my dead MkIIn to them this afternoon. The shipping and insurance alone was close to $100! Yikes!
