When I shoot RAW, I like to edit the photo in Nikon Capture NX before sending to PS. If shooting JPG, I like to launch to PS and skip the NX. I find myself going to the preferences a lot to switch between NX and PS for launching. Under the tab launching is the option to "Assign specific editing applications for each file type." You may need to upgrade Photo Mechanic to 4.5.
