CS3 SUCKS! Pt II and possible fixes
Phil Hawkins, Photographer

->> This appeared on the Fred Miranda board and I did the fixes, but I'm posting it here to see if we can get a concensus as to whether it works or not.

To wit:
"I am just off the phone with Adobe help regarding bridge problems. Here' are some a suggestions that worked for me:

Go to Bridge, Preferences, Thumbnails and select "quick thumbnails" then set "Do Not Process files larger than ____ and enter 400 Mb (or less). Now go to Preferences, Start Up "Scripts" and uncheck everthing except "AdobePhotoshop CS3" (unless you need correspondance with these other functions).

Now back to preferences "Advanced" verify that "Automatically export caches to folders" is NOT checked then check "Purge Cache" and click OK. Close and reopen Bridge. Bridge should work better for you.

Also if you run multiple monitors as I do you then try Preferences, Advanced "Use Software Rendering" which saves video card RAM (used for Mac 3D video rendering even though you/we are just using 2D). After bridge is working well you can always back out of some of these settings while watching performance. Good Luck."

For what it's worth...

->> Well, so far so good... I'm putting it through it's paces and after 15 minutes I can't make it crash, so maybe that was the ticket.

It still goes slow on thumbnails; you cannot quick-scroll by holding down the down arrow like on CS2.

Film at 11.

Why me, Lord... Where's that phone number for the Apple dealer?

I am on the waiting list for this camera and wonder about the bugs I am going to encounter with the first version of this camera, hopefully CANON has read your prior threads about the crashing and realize just how much this gear means to our livelihood. A support site would be great for new versions...
Phil, I have been in your shoes and yes it sucks, try www.creativecow.net and see if you can find answers there...

->> ***ALERT*** CS3 does not migrate your actions. I had about 20 actions built, and only one made through to the other side.

->> Phil,

If you still have access to CS2, you can save your actions (one of the menu options from the actions window--in fact, it will save entire groups of actions) into a file, that you can then use to load the actions back into CS3. I did this when working with the beta, and most actions work the same without any modification from one version to the next.

->> Phil,

For actions, you have to save your old ones to a file (should end in .atn) and then load them into CS3. I keep my actions backed up regularly.

I've used the CS3 beta for a few months, it's faster on both my G5 tower and Macbook Pro than CS2, though I have a couple of plugins that wouldn't work on the MBP so I'd been toggling between CS2 and CS3 on that one. There were a few bugs, but nothing that caused me any problems directly.

The Lightroom beta was very successful, and Adobe had released a really solid beta for PS CS3. I don't usually use beta software or upgrade right away, but on this one I did and it's been great so far. I like the new raw controls and algorithms, being able to open jpegs in Camera Raw is a really nice feature. I don't use Bridge, have heard various complaints on its speed, but also praise for its similarity to Lightroom/Aperture in new features.

->> Loving CS3 myself, it's very fast. I don't use Bridge though, I use Photomechanic instead. Never liked Bridge from the start. It's been very stable on both my PPC machine and Intel laptop. I rolled my actions in as Tony said and they've been running fine.
