->> I can not seem to find any information on the web about the medium or format that McCurry used to capture his famous "Afghan Woman" image. Does anyone know this information? If so, could you also provide a source to back your information up? I am using this image as part of a class project for Photo Critique. And this information is the only info that I am having a hard time finding. -thank you |

->> Thank you Stephen. As I have been researching this photographer and his images of this woman, I have found this to be quite an interesting story. |

->> it was taken in 1984 using a FM2 and 105mm f/2.5 nikkor according to the National Geographic mini special issue they put out after they found the woman... sorry, that's as specific as I can get right now... should be a good info to start with. |

->> Kerri,
Contact the George Eastman House:

There was a recent showing of McCurry's work, and an entire show based upon the specific subject of which you inquire.
A really great person to talk to is David Wooters. Not sure if he's moved on, though. Either way, talk with the folks down in the archives. Pick their brains. Seriously.
Best,
- Andrew |

Wow! The story is even more interesting considering that Usama Bin Laden probably shared the same zip code as Sharbat Gula...at least for a while on and off. Did anybody inquire with McCurry if he asked the two guys that found Sharbat Gula if they bumped into UBL? |

->> I emailed him late lastnight and I received a response from another person at his studio this morning. He used a 35mm camera using chrome film, as this is McCurry’s personal preference I was told. |

->> Kerri -
if you want to know more about this image and the aftermath, pick up a copy of the National Geographic DVD titled "Through the Lens". The main part of the DVD was not all that inspiring for me, but the Bonus feature is a documentary about Steve's search to find the girl/woman years later. In it Steve talks about the conditions that he made the image in, and how hard it is to talk to women in that culture, needing permission of the husband and so forth.
I got the DVD for about $10 through Amazon.com |

->> Steve McCurry signed 20 X 30 posters of the first photo of her at PMA a few years ago... He talked about finding her again and doing the second photo. I belive he was either in the Nikon or Kodak Booth. It's a nice print to have in my collection... not to mention the signed John Biever, Dave Black and Rick Rickman prints... |
