A day with the Mark III
Mark J. Terrill, Photographer
Simi Valley | CA | USA | Posted: 5:10 AM on 03.15.07
->> I had a chance to spend a day with a pre-release Mark III on Wednesday. There is a lot about the camera that is impressive, ten mega pixels, weight, big screen, fast motor drive. But I think that the most significant improvement is how it handles high ISOs. I shot some night tennis matches with it at 3200 ISO. To my unscientific eye, it looked like 1000 ISO. For those of you who can see the wire, have a look at CAMT130 of Tommy Haas celebrating. It's an uncropped image shot at ISO 3200 at 1000 2.8. Pretty impressive!

A lot has also been made of how important the faster motor is. It's definitely helpful with tennis and I think it will be with boxing as well. Both are typically one frame at a time sports, but this camera can make it a two frame sport if you happen to shoot a little too early.

I'm definitely looking forward to getting one.

->> I was out there myself at the Pacific Like Open getting a MkIII demo at the Pacific Life Open. But unlike Mark until bodybuilders add tennis to their routines I didn't do any tennis shooting.

But I can tell you about some MkIII features I really like. The viewfinder is bigger and brighter, yes brighter. The 3 inch LCD is really good and there are going to be lots of practical applications for the live view.

The wireless system is easy to set up and has allows for a number of uses. You can be transmitting images to a computer while saving them locally at your camera to a card, cards, and/or hard drive. You can be shooting, transmitting and making redundant copies on different media all at the same time.

Anyway this camera has a lot of real world answers and is certainly more than just a gimmicked out MkII. This is a new camera. And if you are a self employed photographer, it can be a money maker.

Even as a predominately Nikon shooter, I hope the hype about low noise is true, but I don't think that image really tells us anything.

What's amazing to me is that Mark said this was a "pre-release Mark III" which sometimes means quality issues may still remain. What's most exciting to me is for those who shoot a ton of prep sports, this camera may be a godsend! ;)

I should also add that manual focusing with the video monitor while the camera is over your head is very doable.

Well, we have chimping, now all we have to do is come up with the terminology for this photographic maneuver.

About the new camera though... One of the features, at least on paper, that has caught my attention is the new autofocus system with more and better placement of now 19 precision cross type focus points.

Mark, did you notice an improvement in that area of the body while using it?

->> Frank,

The focus point placement does seem better. There is an inner nine and an outer nine that you can choose from, however I never had the time to set the camera up to my liking. There is a big learning curve with it. It has an all new menu system and I didn't have the time to really study the settings until I got back to the hotel. Also, I didn't have a manual.

John,

I'm not allowed to post RAWs because I don't own the pictures. The AP does. Anyone with access to the AP wire can download the whole file and look at it, though. Granted it has been compressed at 7.

Another addition to my experience is that, for some reason, it seems to be easier to shoot just one frame than with the Mark II. I thought with the faster motor that I wouldn't have a choice but to shoot two or three frames at a time. Overall the button sensitivity seems to be better.

ARGH

Makes me want to be a pirate.

Can't Canon come up with a standard that works across all their cameras?

->> Thanks so much for mentioning the ability to get just one shot - when trying to come up with reasons why I "needed" the new camera, I included the FPS and then had to laugh since I always have my cameras set on low burst as I have never been able to fire just one shot when I have them on high and bursts when I don't want them drive me nuts. Clearly I "need" two now :-).

Obviously the higher ISO, lower noise will be great for hockey and the lovely lighting some rinks have.

->> Mark, I've experienced misfocused shots using the outer AF sensots with the Mk2 bodies.. even when using the back button method...even after rehitting the af button,..I still get back focused shots that are more frusterating than the cost of upgrading to a Mk3!! Basically, I'd like to know how much better the new cross type AF sensors are compared to hows they were before..(if you had such an issue with your Mk2 bodies...(assuming you use them)..

Are they as accurate as the center AF sensor now..(I'm guessing it should be)..

BTW, those high iso shots are incredible! I look forward at not being worried regarding selecting 3200 in a "pinch".. (I have tried very hard to stay withing 1600).. thaty extra stop... WOW! :-) I guess, even IF the AF is so so,.. I'll still be able to shoot a whole stop faster than before! :-)
