Palm Treo 700p, bluetooth and Macbook Pro

->> I just picked up a palm treo 700p that according to the verizon rep was Mac compatible in terms of being able to tether the phone to the macbook pro to use as a modem.
Instead, the palm rep suggested the bluetooth and I was able to set it up successfully but I run into a problem. Whenever I connect to the internet using the blue tooth connection it drops the connection after a few minutes and it appears that it is because I get to a page and am reading or viewing it. Last night I actually tried to upload a large number of images from Photo Mechanic to photoshelter and it was holding the bluetooth connection for the upload for about 60 minutes before i terminated the upload, since it was a test anyway.
The only deduction I can make from this is that as long as there is data being exchanged between the Treo 700p and the Macbook Pro i have no problem but as soon as I stop surfing and read what I found, it drops the connection.
Palm rep has not come up with an answer, so I figured i'd give it a shot and see if any sportsshooters have come across this issue and whether or not they found a solution, settings wise or software wise. |

->> Dirk, if it's like my verizon card which I suspect it is, their server drops your connection if it's inactive for more than four or five minutes. The solution to this is to set your mail application to check for mail every five minutes, or use a program like aol instant messenger etc that are constantly using the connection. I think the verizon software/network is set to terminate unused connections so people aren't signed on all the time just because. Make sense?

->> Dirk,
In your modem settings there is an option check box something along the lines or "remain connected" or the inverse "disconnect when idle for xx minutes". Make sure that is set properly for what you want.
Also, if you need to have a constant data stream, under Apple's utilities there is Network Utility. It has a Ping feature that lets you set a web site that it will constantly send a signal to so you don't lose the connection. When using a Sprint card in the past I wanted to keep the connection while away so I didn't have to reconnect for transmit, I set the utility to ping google and it just keeps doing it over and over again. It doesn't load the page, just sends a signal up to see if it can connect. |

| ->> Does anyone have a solution on how to connect the MBP and the 700p via USB cable? I've got the Bluetooth tethering working, but I seem to have to pair the devices every couple of times I use it and it is becoming a hassle. It'd be much simpler if I could just use the cable and I haven't had any luck figuring out how to make this work. Suggestions? |

| ->> There's a 3rd party program out there called "USB Modem." It costs about $25 and allows you to use the 700p on a tethered connection. In general, I've found that the 700p and the MBP connections are flaky at best and it only seems to work the first time I connect. After that I get errors unless I restart both devices. |

I suspected that Verizon was dropping the connection due to inactivity but they did not know. Both your suggestions worked great when I tested it. Once connected it is very stable, a bit slow but it works for what I need to do.
Saul
As far as I know, they told me that the 700p can not be tethered to a MAC but then again they did not know that their own network would drop a connection due to inactivity so don't quote me on it. Go check out www.palmone.com they have a bunch of support links for mac up.
Thanks for your information
