Archiving, cataloging and organizing images, suggestions?

->> I did a search for this and got some information, but I want current ways of doing it. I am looking to re-create my archive which only I can figure out. A lot of the images need keywords and metadata to make a search easier.
What are your suggestions? What software, etc..?

I second PJ's recommendation of Krogh's The Dam Book. I have read the book and it is the most cogent explanation of the archiving process that I have seen.
