->> Got one better than that for you:

My suggestion -- If you really want to work for a newspaper, magazine or other such publication someday, it will be invaluable for you to not only own, but regularly use, this book. Seriously. For a mere $12 investment you'll have everything you'll ever need to know about AP style. Consider it an investment in your future.
Just my opinion, anyways.
Good luck,

->> Woops. Maybe I didn't completely understand your question the first time -- sorry, never said I was smart!!
I don't know of any programs that function as an AP style "checker" (for either grammer, spelling or punc.). If there is one, I'm sure someone on here knows about it. Either way, if you don't already have one, get that book ... and use it as often as possible. It will all become second nature to you, anyways. If you're up for the work, there are probably myriad websites out there that have practice assignments for AP style -- crash courses in proofing copy, etc. I cannot stress enough how valuable of an asset it it to know AP style, and know it well -- even as a photographer.
Again, good luck, and sorry if I came across like an arse in my first response.

->> Thank you. Yes, I have the book. I have my nose in the book every single day (ah, my profs would be so happy to hear that). I just would like to have a button I could push (like me MSWord spellchecker) to either show corrections or at least bring up the rules. Something faster than dealing with the book. Until I start to get these rules under my skin. I'm committed to learning this. Looking for all the help I can get.
Jean :)
ps. I haven't met any arses here (well, maybe a couple - but none in this post)... I appreciate the help. |

| ->> Jean: all joking aside from my earlier post - even after years (decades) I still have a style book (Canadian Press in my case) close at hand and its a great tool. |

| ->> AP once had an electronic, software version of the AP Stylebook. That was long ago, maybe even some kind of DOS or Win3.2 based stylebook. It flopped. I even had a copy of it at one time when someone let me borrow it to try. |

->> Jean ---
Here's a link to the Associated Press' store. You'll find several "style books" there ... but there is no software (or plug-in) version.
http://www.apbookstore.com/
Most major newspapers develop their own style books ... mostly adding on little idiosyncrasies that particular paper may have in dealing with the spelling, grammar or reference point. But they are all essentially the same.
The point of any style book is to have a guideline for uniformity in use of the language. Also it sets a structure for certain functions and uses ... like "AP style captions".
Most of the time, common sense and a decent "spell checker" (great to see the the new version of Photo Mechanic has a spell check function!) will get you by in the field. (As well as a good copy desk at the office.)
The Kahuna.
P.S. ... I think a colleague of mine once told me that "the AP style" was brown shoes worn with a gray suit. |

->> I am the Managing Editor for my student newspaper. And the book that G.J. McCarthy showed you is my favorite. Style book to use. The Cleveland Plain Dealer used that when we went took a tour.
But as for style, they were correct when they said above that each paper uses their own style. AP style is one thing, but if your paper uses its own style, the AP style book might be wrong for your paper. Example, AP Style says that on second reference you just use last name, but the NYT always use Mr., Miss, Mrs. ect.
Check with your boss and see if they have their own Style Book. That way, even if you are using AP Style you won’t be going against your newspapers style.
Hope this is more helpful than

| ->> I've been looking for the same type of plug in for several months, and even asked here (at least you got someone to answer you) Apparently they haven't designed such a thing. Seems the only way is to turn off ms word's lousy grammar check and memorize "the book". Kind of a pain for us non writers, but that seems the way it goes. |

I guess it must have gone out of style.
Also, there is a Broadcast News Handbook. I bet they have lots of those. |
