D2X Shutter Actuations Question

->> Is there any way these can be changed? Is it always acurate?
I was going to buy a D2Xs but came across someone selling a D2X and it says "Camera Actuations: 3780." This person has owned it for awhile but said "it has seen very little use" which if the shutter actuations can't be changed, is true.
Does anyone know if they can be changed?
If you were able to get this camera for $2000, would you buy it or go for the new D2XS?
Thanks for any input.

->> Debbie,
I'm sure that there is some way of resetting any data in any chip. Whether or not the end user will go to that extent or has access to the proper tools is a different matter. I guess that if it were me, I would run the serial number by NPS to see if the camera had been in for any major issues AND that it is a USA body. There is no sense in buying a body that you won't be able to have repaired here in the US. |

->> Eric,
will NPS tell someone is it is a USA body or if it has been in for any major issues?
Have you ever tried that?

->> Debbie yes they can tell you whether or not the body is a USA model. As far as the repair history, I don't know but it's worth the call.
You didn't ask but I'll add:
As far as the D2x versus the D2xs I can tell you from first hand experience that I had to really get accustomed to the new display. On my D2Xs the colors, especially the greens, seemed to shift towards yellow. But this is on the camera's display only. The colors are spot on in the files. Also the files on the D2Xs appeared to me, to be cleaner, have less noise better DR. This was compared to a D2x that had been to NPS 4 times, maybe I was seeing files as they should have looked all along ;> The new HSC lcd viewfinder mask is nice but not $1000 nice. The new battery is really awesome!
Good Luck |

->> Thanks, Eric.
With the new battery, will it also work on the D2X?
Would you buy a new D2Xs or go with a low actuation D2X that had no repairs and is USA?
I love the D2X I am, and have been using, since it first came out. I went through one before this and it was awful (one of the first one's off the lot).I am just trying to get validation for the "s" being that much better, and worth it.

->> Yes the new battery will work in your D2x. I'd say go with the D2X as, i've heard some people don't like the new monitor.
I just bought another D2X because of the price. Mine cost me $2900 with 43,000 clicks on it.
just my 2 cents |

->> Mark,
do you know off hand if someone can change the shutter actuations? The one I am looking at is VERY low-at 3780, for $2000.
I was sort of leaning towards the D2X ONLY because I love mine so much and don't know enough people who have a D2Xs yet.

->> Debbie,
I'm with Marc as to not being in love with the monitor on the D2Xs body. All things being equal I'd update the firmware to the newest version test fire a few dozen shots and if all looked well I'd fork over the $2K on the D2x. Heck the D3something has to be around a corner somewhere and the $3K you save can be used as seed money for that!
Debbie is the camera that you are looking at owned by a dentist or maybe only used as a remote or a backup to a backup? I mean it is possible that it is owned by someone with too much money and "body envy" :) |

->> Eric,
All I know is the person is a photographer and he said it has seen "little use" so I am not sure what he does or if he uses a different camera. I am an odd one when it comes to cameras-I can have 2 of the same cameras but will favor one for months or a year, and then I will pull out the other one and give the other one(s) a rest for months. When I sold my D200 recently, it had about the same amount of actuations and I bought it the first week they came out. So he can be the same way. He didn't know too many of the questions I asked but when I took a photo and ran it through the program it said 3780.
Not sure if any of the below would help but this is what the program said:

->> Debra...since no one here can CONFIM this with (100% certainty) why don't you call Nikon and get the info from them?
Based on your own actions, you already know that it's not beyond belief that a body have 3800 actuations on it...but if you think the guy would try to scam you on the # of actuations, you should walk away from the deal anyway.
Since no SS member has chimed in with a confrmation that one can easily change/reset the actuation count on a camera I'm leaning towards the fact that it's not something that can be done by the ABOVE AVERAGE user. I seem to remeber Canon shooters make comments related to their acuation count being reset when returned from CPS...but I've never heard that from Nikon shooters.
Again...ALL of this should be able to be conformed by Nikon/NPS/etc.

->> Hey Debra,
I'll throw some partially related advice into the mix. The only time I've seen the shutter actuations change in any Nikon camera was when I sent my D70 off to Nikon for the blinking light of death repair. I have no idea what Nikon did but when I received the camera back, the actuations were reset back to 0 according to Opanda.
However, when I sent my Nikon D2H to Nikon for a meter repair, when I received the camera back, it still had the number of actuations, even though the metering system was replaced and firmware was updated.
So in conclusion, it is somehow possible for Nikon to reset the shutter click count, but I have no clue how to do it. I figured the advice might be worth something anyways.
If you trust the seller enough to buy from them, I would see it as a non-issue. |

->> Debbie,
Here is one thing that I noticed from the info that you have posted. The camera's firmware is still version 1.0. What that tells me is that the camera has not been to Nikon any time recently. Thinking off the top of my head, there were two firmware updates. Had the camera gone to Nikon for service and had Nikon done a possible reset of any of the counters they would have updated the firmware as part of the service call. I think that if you were to even send the camera in for a cleaning and alignment they update the firmware as part of the basic service. Again give NPS a call to make sure but it's looking good that you may have a D2X that spends much of it's time at the bottom of the bag.
Yea for you! |

If you decide not to purchase this D2x, please advise, as I am very interested as I can use a backup for that price.

He decided to keep it.
I had my mind al lmade up too..now it looks like there will be a new D2Xs in my home soon. (and the way it ALWAYS works when I buy a camera...within a month, Nikon announces a new one). I love my D2X so hopefully the "S" will be just as good (for me)
