->> I just purchased my first MAC Computer. I got a iMAC with the 24" screen (I can see it will take some getting used to). I was using Photoshop CS2 on my PC Laptop. I will comtinue to use that until I get the $ to go MAC. I probally will wait until CS3 comes out.
MY question is what are your suggestions for must have software for my new MAC (Photography wise) I am downloading the trial version of Apples Aperture 1.5. But what other suggestions does anyone have??? |

| ->> Mac ImageRecall, it has salavaged so much data from corrupted cards that its been the best $49 program. I love Aperture so I hope you like it as well, its a major timesaver. Toast and Popcorn are great CD/DVD burning programs. Feel free to drop me a line for tech help. |

->> You can easily transfer your PC version of Photoshop to your Mac. This link explains how to do this.

Of course if you plan on keeping your pc and Mac running Photoshop then you'll need to fork out the money for a second license. Otherwise take advance or the cross grade as it won't cost you a thing either.

| ->> You might as well use your CS2 serial to register the Mac version of CS3 beta. On my PC, CS3 is pretty darn rock solid and Bridge is actually usable. |

->> Here's a list of some of the programs I've found useful while on assignments over the past year.
1) Photoshop CS3. Wait until it comes out. I've been using the Beta and I'm dreading the thought of having to go back to CS.
2) PhotoMechanic - Raw, Jpeg, Tiff viewer, FTP, IPTC editor
3) Quickbooks Pro - Financial
4) Transmit - FTP supplement to PhotoMechanic
5) PhotoRescue - Recovery
6) PhotoQuote - Stock/resale estimator
7) SilverKeeper - Free backup software
8) Appleworks or Office - Word Processing. Applewoks is ALOT cheaper & does almost all I need, but I sometimes need Powerpoint
9) Safari, Mail, Address Book, iTunes, iCal (all standard with OSX)
10) Skype - Free VIOP when I'm out of town to chat with wife & kids
11) Civilization III - for sanity
12) Fire, AIM or Yahoo IM (The new AOL looks promising & lots of editors are using IM)
13) Soundslides - Multimedia
14) Audacity - Sound
15) Quicktime Pro - Sound & video
16) Toast 7 - CD/DVD authoring
17) Stuffit 10 or Deluxe - File compression and expansion software
18) Final Cut Pro - Video editing
19) Adobe Acrobat - PDF editing and creation software
20) iView Media Pro - Making web galleries. Photoshop can do this too, but I like the way the iView galleries look.
21) Macromdia Dreamweaver MX and Flash MX - For making websites. I do my own.
22) Chicken of the VNC - Remote acess to other computers via internet connection
23) Quark - Layout & Design. I rarely use this, but sometime I need to do some layout stuff.
Hope this helps some.

->> As for things other people haven't mentioned yet:
I'd add GoogleEarth to the list, though I suppose you can access it through the web fairly easily these days too...

| ->> Since your in an office setting, I like Fax STF. I like MS Office over AppleWorks. Transmit as someone suggested is a very intuitive program for FTP, and Toast 7 is great. |

->> I'd pretty much agree with Oscar's list with one exception:
Adium instead of Fire. Fire development has ceased, so this is stagnant software. I miss some aspects of Fire, but Adium combined with Growl for notification is pretty swell. I use it for Yahoo!, AIM, MSN, and ICQ, and it understands other protocols as well.
Also, I don't personally use iView or Photo Mechanic - GraphicConverter does what I need for previewing and sorting, and I have scripts on my web site to build galleries. Never tried iView for this, but I can't stand Photoshop's templates. |

| ->> Register for a class, any class, at your local Community College. I can do it on-line for $50 or less. This qualifies you for Apple's Education discounts meaning things like Final Cut Pro for $500-700 instead of $1200... |

->> Thanks for all the great suggestions. I have downloaded the Aperture 1.5 30 day trial (I think I am going to purchase it). I am looking into some of the other things suggested here.
Also at the new Apple store (Atlantic City, NJ) where I purchased my iMAC, they offer training for $99 for a year and with that you get 1 hour a week for 52 weeks, on any thing you wish, you just have to call ahead to schedule an appointment. This sounds like a pretty good deal to me, especially for a MAC newbie. |

->> I'll second Patrick's vote for Adium instead of Fire or any other instant messenger protocol - it works extremely well, has great open source support, and looks super sharp.
Other musthaves Photomechanic (can't be said enough), Cyberduck (free) or Fetch (also good), and Dreamweaver & Flash.
Definitely register for the CS3 Beta of Photoshop; its lacking only a few features and will run worlds faster than CS2. |
