->> I am debating over buying a 1d Mark II 8.2mp with about 90,000 actuations for $1900. Any idea how much more life I should expect out of this thing. Ive heard there good to about 200k but im not sure if that's just the shutter or the whole body.

->> The canon web site rates the durability at 200,000. I'm sure that depends on the condition the body is used in of course. For $1900 sounds like a good deal to me. Just give the camera a good test drive!

Just purchased a MKII for a similar price in similar condition. It works great. IIRC it is less than $400 to get the shutter replaced by CPS when it finally goes.

->> Rob,

My old 1d's went over 150,000 before I replaced the shutters.
Replacing the shutter only cost between 350 and 400 dollars.
Something to keep in mind.
The Mark II is supposed to last even longer than the original 1ds...
Good Luck.

->> I've heard mixed reviews on the shutter life. I brought this up with some colleages at a basketball game last week and got laughed at, then told by several people that despite the 200K rating, very few of them have gotten too much past 50K before needing a new shutter. Really, though, I've seen many of them on the market now (including the one I just purchased) with few actuations going for $2200-2300... and with a new shutter costing around $400... even if you end up replacing it sooner than later, you're not really losing out, as long as the rest of the camera's in good condition.

Bottom line, i have had 11 canon dig bodies and never replaced a shutter on any of them and of my 4 close friends who all shoot canon, i dont know of any of them to have to replace a shutter.

these days you will replace the camera with the new technology usually before it wears out.

That's the first I've ever heard of Canon 1D of any kind needing shutter replacement at such a low number. In fact, I've never heard of any shutter replacements before 150,000 - perhaps your post had a typo in it and should have read..

->> Shutter mileage depends on the camera and usage I think.

I had my MK2 shutter replaced at 83K last April. I've been the only owner of the camera. The shutter blew (the blade assembly was in three pieces) while shooting the state wrestling finals about 1/3 of the way into the night. Cost was $489 for new shutter and top plate (don't know why they replaced it I like to the worn look) plus the normal CLA from CPS (also think they replaced my sensor, but that is another story). The camera body was six month past the my original warranty coverage when it went in for repair. Funny thing is the accuation count was not reset????

My rationale is for $500 I basically got a new body. If that happens once every 18 months I can live with that. Beats running out and buy the latest, greatest which only contains minor upgrades for $1200 - $2200 after the sale of the previous camera body.

When the used prices of MK2 hit $1800, I'll buy a couple more. Even if I have to send them in for CLA and a new shutter soon afterwards I feel that it will be money well spent and worth it.

->> The Mark II is a robust camera. I had a sensor problem with one at around 60,000 -- but that's it. I'd take the 1900 deal in a heartbeat.

Vern, those 1D's you had must have all been good except for the two you sold me. After 6 months, I the hotshoe went dead on one of them. Probably my fault though ;)

->> Well, it's hit or miss with the shutter life and my experience has led me to doubt the shutter life on the Mark II. Mine went down at 70K and two other people that I have worked with had their shutters go at under a 100K. The saving grace is that Canon, at least in Jersey seems to be replacing them at no cost even after the warantee has expired and the replacement shutter has been a workhorse. I'm now well over 200K with the new shutter and it's still going strong.

$1900 is a great deal though. Grab it!

->> The MkII shutters do blow prematurely in some cases. I had one go at around 50,000 (a DsMkII) and a 1DMkII at 20,000 (Canon fixed this one free). But I have a third that is approaching 70,000 with no problems...go figure.

It is pretty cheap to replace - the DsMkII replacement was under $300. But it is annoying.

FYI - my local camera dealer is getting refurb MkII's on a pretty regular basis and selling them for $2,000 each. If you have a dealer nearby you might want to check yours - the refurbs come with a bit of a warranty (30 days maybe?).

->> Ahh, looking for a nce upgrade from the 20D I see. I'd go for it. Like everyone has said, it's rated for 200k clicks plus it's not that expensive if the shutter does go out. Who you picking this up from?

->> My Mark II was a problem child. The shutter blew out, the focus went out and the main board went out all within 7 months. On the 3rd trip back CPS replaced everything in the body even tho the shutter and mirror box had been recently replaced. The basically rebuilt the entire camera as their thinking was replace everything at the same time and the problems would go away. They were right. 40k clicks later, not a issue to be had. Would I buy another one, yes, its a great camera. This camera was the only Canon item I have ever owned that went down, so it was just a fluke. They replaced everything at no charge, the longest it was gone was 8 days on the 3rd trip. CPS NJ is really great to work with.
