->> I know my CS 1 doesn't open D200 raw photos, but sometimes it manages to make (unopenable) thumbnails. Why and how? And how come only some of the time? Just curious.

->> It is possible that it is reading an embedded Jpeg within the RAW file.

->> Have you upgraded Camera Raw? The version that came with CS1 was before the D200 so it doesn't have the ability to open the files. Go to the Adobe site and get the newer version ACR and that should solve the problem.

->> You can't use ACR 3.x with PhotoShop CS. ACR compatibility stops at 2.x (2.4 to be exact, I believe) with CS, and you need 3.x to open D200 files.

->> Oooh, that stinks. I think that you can use other raw coverters like Rawshooter with CS. Try those.

->> What about converting your RAW files to DNG files with Adobe's free file converter? CS should be able to open a DNG file I would think. I just starting switching all my RAW's to DNG just to keep the metdata all within the same file, instead of having to deal with the XMP sidecars.

->> I have software to convert the files. I was just curious as to why CS can "sort of" open them.

->> I might be wrong here, but I think Photoshop (and the File Browser in CS) uses the actual raw data to generate thumbnails. (Many other browsers, like Photo Mechanic use the embedded JPEG.) So if the Raw Converter in Photoshop cannot read or open the file, it cannot generate the JPEG. This could also explain why Photoshop and Bridge are so slow to generate thumbnails compared to Photo Mechanic.
