To get the right dialog to be able to open JPG files in Camera Raw click on the "Use Adobe Dialog" in the lower left corner of the "Open" window to change to the Adobe Open Dialog.
Hope this helps...

After you download CS3 visit the web page listed below and enter your CS2 serial number to generate a CS3 serial number. Use the generated CS3 serial number to register/activate the software.

I've been playing with it some more.... if I click the portrait / landscape buttons back and forth, the driver updates ?!?!
Now I gotta test this with the network printers. It simply will not allow me to select a paper size on my networked Mitsubishi 9550 or a Kodak 1400 for that matter. |

->> O.K. got part of it working. It just doesn't play nice with my printers over a network. I had to make the settings at the 'server' end and then I could work from my workstation and have it print. Gotta be a bug in there somewhere. I went back to CS2 and everything worked fine as could be.
I've posted a message on the photoshop forum on the Adobe site. They don't have a 'normal' bug report system like many other programs when they are released in beta versions. Maybe someone will get back to me. |

->> What I don't get is why a serial number from Creative Suite 2 doesn't work, only a stand alone PhotoShop CS2 serial number works.
Kind of short sighted on Adobe's part is my opinion. Now I have to see that damn 30 day warning all the time.
I mean I paid for PhotoShop CS2 when I bought the more expensive Creative Suite!
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That said, Camera Raw is much improved. Very awesome. |

If I am not mistaken, I believe that by being a registered owner of Creative Suite 2, you are eligible for the Photoshop CS3 beta evaluation beyond the limited time period.
Have you tried what I've suggested in an earlier post on this topic?
I could be wrong but I would give the link I supplied a visit, if you haven't done so already, and supply your CS2 serial number to obtain a CS3 serial number to activate the beta.
Good Luck

I see no noticeable speed difference between CS2 and CS3 on my G4 PowerBook. I have not used CS in ages, so I don't know how it compares to that version.
I hope that helps. |

->> Well, speaking as a Windows user, there isnt a whole lot improved to warrant the upgrade. However here are a few things that I enjoy:
1) The vibrance slider in ACR beats the pants off using the saturation slider.
2) The curves dialog has a few more things to make it easier, like a histogram.
3) The palettes are slightly easier to resize and move around.
4) Smart filters
5) The black and white conversion tool
6) the quick select tool beats the pants off the magic wand
There are still several filters and other tools in the Image menu that are unavailable in 16-bit. Oh well. |

Spell Catcher from Rainmaker (http://www.rainmakerinc.com/). It is about $50 works with everything from AppleWorks to Photoshop (and the File Info box) to Word and Excel. I have been using it since the good old days of System 7 (on my Macs) when it was called Thunder 7. It is essential software.

->> David,
If they did nothing else but improve the loading speed, I'd upgrade. CS3 will save me about 5-10 seconds every time I open the program, and that will probably add years to my life from reduced stress and frustration. :-)
I can easily see asking myself a year or two from now how I ever did without some of the features they have added...just as with every previous version I've used.

I have an assortment of files, .nef, .tif (1D raw), .crw and .cr2 - all but cr 2 open just fine in CS3/ACR4. I'm wondering if the problem is something on my computer or if there is an incompatibility in Photo Mechanic.

Thumbnail previews are by default soft in order to increase speed. Go into preferences->thumbnails and you can tell it to automatically generate high quality thumbs which takes up a lot of time, or you can have it generate a high quality thumb only when an image is previewed. |
