Canon error 99 and cold
Sarah Phipps, Photographer

->> One of our photographers is getting an error 99 when shooting in the cold. It will stop the error 99 whenever the camera warms back up.
It has been to the repair shop and Canon could not find anything wrong with it.

Has anybody else has similar problems?

But a week ago it was not cold and the football game was in the 30's which I don't consider cold either. I'm guessing it's not the cold...gonna send mine in Monday...good luck...Oh...when you get that error, turn off the camera...remove the battery...and turn the camera back on...that should get it working again...Dan.

->> It's your CF. I have this happen on occassion when I'm shooting landscapes and if you change CFs it should clear up. Or, you can re-format your CF and that should clear it up too. But obviously if you've been shooting all day and have a full CF, don't reformat, just change it out. Your original images should be good when you download to your laptop/desktop.

Don't ask me why this happens with Canon gear in the cold, it just does. My D-Rebel, 20D and 5D all did it/do it and there's nothing you can do about it that I'm aware of.

->> It is a Mark IIN.

The battery, turn on/off does not work, letting it sit for 30 plus minutes seems to be the only thing makes it work again.

The cold seems to be a common factor in the error 99. Our afternoon low was around 29 degrees. Nobody else on staff has had a problem.

I will have him try switching cards out next time it happens.

It just ran out of its year warranty, too.

Like you, I thought it was my battery and tried switching it but no luck. Giving it a 15 minute warm up break was the only way to get it working again. Switched to SanDisk's Extreme III cards and haven't had the problem since.

->> I had a similar problem last weekend covering four football championship games. For the night game I was using 2 lexar 1gb s in a Mark IIN and one in a 1D. I was chimping and erasing fast on the IIN when the light on the camera back indicating card activity wouldn't go off and I got an error message.
I re-entered the battery but the entire card seemed completely erased. I switched cards and continued the game but I got a message on screen I'd never seen before with the erased card... something about not being able to access the folder.
That night, I tried to access the images but the card gave the same message. It wouldn't download into Photo Mechanic either. Nada. I thought it was fried. I remembered the warning about lexar 80x cards and Canons. I tried Image Rescue from Lexar and ironically it wouldn't work and I was able to use San Disk's Photo Rescue to recover the images. The card wouldn't reformat, so I used Photo Rescue again to wipe the card and that did the trick. The card re-formatted and is still useable.
Most of the time I use San Disk Extreme III's and this lesson taught me to get a few more before Spring Lax season begins. Never had a problem with them.

Our other photog is having this happen on his Mark II N and i have the problem with my 10D and my 70-200 2.8 IS

->> Hello guys, I've had this trouble before with my older 10D - my problem was with the contacts in the body that connect with the contacts in the lens.

I found this checklist posted on Richard's Notes blog (
http://www.richardsnotes.org/archives/2005/04/29/50mm-lens-contact-points/) very helpful - apparently it originated from a Canon tech -

Here it is in full:

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

I hope you find this helpful.
And good luck

->> Yep,.... I too had a 10D that constantly had problems like that, and even after sending it in to Canon to get it "fixed", including a new shutter, and fixing the rear LCD which went black one day,.. it came back doing the same error 99 thing....again, and again,...and again.... :-(

After replacing them with upgrades to 20D bodies,... I nearly took up a bet with someone who claimed the 10D was "Bullet Proof".. ;-)

I ended up selling it to a friend to left his camera bag in his trunk and got rear-ended by a big car doing 50mph.. Apparently, the 10D wasn't crush proof..

->> Error 99 and Error 01 this weekend shooting mountain biking. Weather was 46 and windy on Saturday and 60 and calm on Sunday. My 30D and 70-200 non IS were calibrated a few months ago at Canon, and the lens was rebuilt. I am starting to have error 99 codes fairly often, but yesterday's error 01 was a first. I've also noticed that the camera sometimes doesn't fire at 5fps sometimes. On the plus side, the focusing and color has been incredible since the error 99 codes have started - or maybe I'm getting better and it's a coincidence. :~)

It appears that my shutter is fried. Now comes the hard part. Repair it (anyone know how much it is to replace a 10D shutter)? Or just buy a new camera?

Repair on my D30 shutter was about $200 a few years back. I'd assume it would be close to the same since they are both old models. Might just be worth upgrading.

->> Max,

That's about what CPS quoted me.

Since I got my 1D a while back I haven't touched the 10D much at all. I was planning on getting another 1D soon anyway. I checked with my dealer this morning and they had a "low-miles" 1D for a great price so I snatched that up.

I never really was happy with the way to 10D operated.

->> Sarah,
My Canon rep told me the other day that Error 99 is just a general error warning and is not specific. It is not your CF card. I think you just need to send it in and have Canon do a diagnostics test on it to determine the specific problem. Good luck...Dan.

->> Ok guys here's another question then...

I was just up in Harbin (NW part of China about 250 miles as the crow flies from Vladivlastok) and the temperatures ranged from about a high of 3 degrees Centigrade to a low of -21 Centrigrade. Usually after being outside for about an hour the images from the camera would start to get vertical lines through them on the horizontal. This went away after the camera warmed back up. Now I realize this was probably b/c the sensor was cold, right? Has anyone else had this happen before?

->> "this was probably b/c the sensor was cold"

that's grabbing at too specific a cause.

A more likely answer is one of the chips, circuit boards or connectors has a problem with the cold.

Finding then fixing this sort of problem is tough because it's tied to the cold and usually involves taking the body apart, reseating all the connectors, putting the body into an airtight bag, freezing it all in a freezer, then taking it out and seeing if the problem appears. Then, they can try diagnostics until the body warms up. Or, they just replace all the electronics and hope that fixed it.

An easier solution to the problem is to warm the camera body so it stays above freezing. A lot of cold-weather shooters will tape chemical hot packs to the body. How many? As many as it takes.

You probably already found out about the problems of breath and moisture condensing then freezing on the body and lens. Hot packs help avoid that too.

I very seldom have to shoot when it's freezing, but I've considered water cooling for my cameras occasionally. :-)
