->> Forgive me for not giving all the pertinent details with my original post, which two members were kind enough to answer quickly. I apparently have a stranger problem than I thought.
The card downloaded the first 126 images of the 400 or so I shot. I went on to download other cards, then when selecting my images I noticed many from the 4GB card were missing. I plugged the card back into the reader and this time the activity light flickered for only a couple of seconds and then went to a steady light (no activity). No icon for the card/reader/drive showed up on the desktop. I tried using other card readers and got the same result, but they did work with other cards.
I put the card back into the camera, a Mk II N, and connected vis the Firewire cable as per Canon's directions. The Canon software begins to download the first 126 images, but the camera never shows up as an available drive/card. And connecting via the USB port gives me a "No camera found" message, both with this card and others.
Do I just shoot myself now or pay $125 to have some data recovery outfit tell me the rest of the images are beyond reach? |

| ->> I don't know about Canon software, but when I had similar problems in the past, disabling the transfer software (Photo Mechanic, Nikon View, whatever) and running Photo Rescue usually works. Maybe a corrupt file (#127?) is messing with your directory. |

->> Jeff ,
Try another card reader. Also try to see if you can see images in the card. What kind of card is it? If it is a Sandisk, . You can use Sandisk's rescue program, or use Lexars program. I have had very good results recovering flash cards using these programs, to this day I ahve recovered about 15-20 cards using these programs. I have yet to lose more than 5-6 images per recovery. If you have any questions please contact me I will try to help you through it. I know also that the card companies are pretty good about helping you recover the info lost on a card , I am sure they would be more than helpful to help you with the situation. I have also seen Chris's situation before and one file can keep the complete card from downloading. |

->> Jeff,
If the card isn't completely dead, a radical try when all else fails is to put the card in the camera and reformat it.
Then pop it in the computer to see if it will mount and run a rescue software. PhotoRescue will recover from reformatted cards. When I've run it on a reformatted disk I not only got my latest assignment but stuff from months and months before that had not been overwritten on the disk. |
