17" Powerbook...

->> I'm debating to buy a Powerbook and I can't decide on the 15" or the 17". Being a student I do get a rebate and a discount on anything Mac sells but I was wondering for those of you out there who have a powerbook does the extra two inches make that much of a difference and does it have any other little features the 15" doesn't.

->> Right now the 17 inch has Airport Extreme (faster wireless), has a backlight keybord. Superdrive. All around better technology then the 15" inch. This is rumored to be changing as the 15" is due shortly to have a new upgraded model (converting to the Aluminum case like the 12" and 17" faster procressor and memory access etc.) very shortly, perhaps with the next week or two or maybe a month.

->> Sam- the 17 inch is faster and cooler - an amazing machine that I'd love to work on

BUT...

It's HUGE and so big I could and would NEVER want to travel with it...it's also HEAVY. We have one at the paper and the editors use it to edit - it's amazing to edit pix on it in Photo Mechanic as the redraw is instantaneous (takes one second or so on my 12in Powerbook) and the images are gorgeous on the screen. however my editor tried to leave it behind often during our trip as he said it kept putting his back out of wack!

->> Exactly... I'm leaning to a 12" Powerbook to replace my 2 year old iBook. What are some of your other impressions of the 12"? I'm actually debating between the 12" or the possible rumored 15.4" aluminum replacement for the 15". As it isn't even announced yet can't think about it till then. The current 15" is not for me as I already upgraded my Airport base station to an Airport Extreme one in anticipation of my future purchase.

->> I would wait until Jobs keynote at WWDC on 6/23. There is a strong indication that Apple is going to start replacing it's pro lines in the near future. Even if you decide to go with one of the current models, you might save yourself several hundred dollars as Apple clears out inventory.

->> I'd say if you were mainly going to use it from home at your desk, then do it...but I feel it is far to bulky to take from location to location. I currently use the 15'' titanium. It is the best investment I've made. But I've also heard good things about the 12''...but I don't think I would want to sacrifice the screen size though. I really want that illuminated keyboard though.... ~bob

->> Brian - take Howar's advice and wait 'til 6/23 - you CAN'T lose by doing that.

I have a powerful desktop at home - so I use my 12 inch only for work and transmitting - and LOVE it. Could be a tad bit faster and would love a PCMCIA slot - but you can't beat the way it's built.

The 15 is the one I'd go with if it's your main computer.

For now - wait 'til after 6/23 - at worst you'll get a nice price drop...

->> Actually I have 6 computers... a Dual Proscessor 1.4 Ghz, A few other G4 workstations that server as my web servers etc. I try to buy a laptop every two years and a new work station once a year or so and then retire a 3 or 4 years box.

The Laptop would replace my take along iBook which is two years old. I think the 12" would be great, I plan to wait till later this month to make the final call. The current 15" is already not a possibility as I have like I said I upgraded to basestation to an Airport Extreme one knowing I was getting a new laptop soon. It sits on my coffee table when I'm home, I use it to Browse MLB.com, BaseballAmerica.com, sportsshooter.com for my sports info and Imdb.com for when I'm watching movies.
