Because if there is a sale... I may be interested in upgrading from my powerbook. |

->> Andrew,
MacBooks with upgraded, faster core 2 duo processors are now being offered by Apple for purchase. Not on sale at a lower price.
But the new models could translate to some dealers dropping prices on the older models to clear their inventory. |

->> I see the MacBook Pros at the Apple Store, but can't find a listing for a MacBook.
I noticed the iMac with the Core2 Duo Processor is the same price...if the same is true of the MacBook, I'll be ready to upgrade pretty soon. :) |

| ->> Let me amend what I just posted, and say that I see the MacBook Pros with new processors, but cannot find a MacBook listing with the new processor. |

| ->> So there is one thing I'm pondering as I think about replacing my Powerbook. Given the heavy hard drive workload when dumping cards, any idea what real life speed gains there are with a 4200rpm drive vs the standard one running at 5400rpm? |

| ->> huge differences when you talk about hard drive speed. Definitely go with the 5400rpm drive. They used to sell them with a 100gb 7200rpm drive as well. Don't really get why they did away with that option.... I definitely would have been going with that drive. |

->> No tax at amazon.com either. Plus, they usually run rebates, even on new products, to bring the price inline with the educational discount at the Apple Store.
And, right now, old Macbook Pros (Intel Core Duos) are heavily discounted. $1600 for the 2.0ghz model at Amazon. |

->> Posting in this MB Pro thread to get a few more eyes:
Can anyone comment on the speed of the intel MB Pro's compared to the older dual G5's? I'm thinking of dumping my dual 1.8 G5 tower altogether for the newly announced core duo machines. Am I insane to think they're even comparable? |

->> Bob, what apps will you be running? Other than Photoshop, I'd say my MacBook (not the pro version) with the older 2 GHz Core Duo processor is faster at most things than my G5 2.3 GHz DP. For example, converting Canon 1D Mark II N raw files with Canon's DPP software is about 30% faster on the MB than the G5. Photo Mechanic is also faster on the MB... All of the Apple supplied apps like Mail, Safari, etc. seem faster on the Intel processor. The MB is also very fast when booting up.
The MacBook is the first Mac laptop I've had that's faster than a relatively up to date Mac tower... |

| ->> I'm running CS 2, Photo mechanic and Leaf Capture v8 and v10. I'm concerned about speed with Photoshop as it's not intel native. |
