I (heart) my new Canons, but...

->> ...I have a quick question for all you Canon people. I just switched from Nikon to a couple Mark II N's since going freelance and I love everything about them. I mean everything. If I weren't married, I would propose to them. Joking. Kind of.
The ONLY thing I'm having issues with is at high ISO's (above 800) there seems to be some random banding going on in every other frame, and am not sure what to do about it. Is this a firmware thing? A battery thing? A formatting thing? An exposure thing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated....I searched the boards but found only a little bit of info on the problem. I need a solution, quick, and I know there are some gear-heads out there willing to make me look stupid.
Thanks!

| ->> Is it on both cameras or just one? I've heard of people getting this occasionally...but usually it's a bad camera... |

->> Welcome to the Canon club, Chip!
I have heard of banding issues occasionally with the 1D series, but it seemed to be more on the older CCD model (the old "1D" model). I've seen my share of banding on that old beast, but it's never really been bad enough that it's stopped me from using a shot. I've also read, but have not experienced firsthand, that certain fast lenses - the 50mm 1.4, for example - react strangely with the camera and can produce banding. Which lens(es) do you have the problem with?
How severe is it in your case? Do you have any examples that we could take a look at? Hopefully it's nothing too severe, but if it is I'd strongly recommend applying for CPS (Canon Professional Services), then sending the bodies out with a few samples and having their pros take a look at 'em. Good luck! |

No, this is an "Act of God" thing. The Big Guy thinks you're just a little *too* good, and this is his way of leveling the playing field for the rest of us.
[I knew all those extra Novenas would pay off!]
And, dude, "I (heart) ..."?? That's a damn "Jennaism" if I've ever heard one! Oh, brother ... they're rubbing off on the Florida crowd already. Pretty soon you'll start thinking everything is cute -- even dead puppies -- or you'll grow to hate all living matter and insist on wine with every meal.
Best of luck, kiddo. When the banding gets you down, just remember all us little folk still *loving* our D2's.

->> Okay,
So it seems to be with one camera and both the 70-200mm and 16-35mm. I just fired off a couple frames of my sleeping pup next to me to test show y'all:
http://www.sportsshooter.com/chiplitherland/banding/.
These frames are one after each other at ISO 1000, 1/30th, f/2.8.
Guess I'll be making a call tomorrow unless someone can enlighten me on the problem.
Thanks, guys!
Chip
P.S. Gerry, the puppy is not dead. Just sleeping. And cute. |

->> Hey Chip,
Send her back. I had the same issue with my 1d markIIn.
Banding started on mine around 1000iso and got really bad at 1600 and horrid at 3200. (Streaks across the frame).
It would usually only happen on the first frame of a multi-frame series. If I held the shutter down for three frames, the first frame would be the one with the banding and then it usually would go away (or at least lesson).
I sent mine back to B&H and got a new one. I sent them a CD with the banded images on it. I sent them the higher ISO ones so it was easier to see quickly.
The new one has never done that. Just wish it was a noise free as my 5d! :)
Good luck.

->> Thanks you guys, I really appreciate the help! Looks like a a burial in the FedEx casket is in order, just stinks that it's only a month old. Sad.
Now time to update the site with actual work and not sleeping puppies. At least it wasn't a baby in a flower pot.

->> A last thing to check...
Try swapping batteries. Someone told me about a bad battery causing this. I'm not sure how this is possible, just passing it along... |

->> Chip,
I have never noticed the banding on my MK IIn, but I find that camera to be pretty noisy in general if I am shooting in JPG mode at high ISO. The noise in RAW seems to look more like grain so whenever possible I shoot RAW at ISO 800 or higher. My old 1D definitely has banding problems but that hasn't been used in forever.
BTW: You lose 20 man points for that thread title. |

->> Edmund,
Yeah, I started shooting RAW + JPG when I switched to freelance now that I own the copyright to the photos and have the time to process RAW files - funny how that works. Everything about those files are gorgeous otherwise...this just seemed to be a random defect that happenned with both the RAW and JPG on one specific body.
Just so everyone knows:
1. I am a man, even though I used the phrase "(heart)."
2. Everything is taken care of, the body is off to the big defect bin in the sky.
