Adobe Photoshop and Nikon NEF files

->> I have Photoshop CS2, and recently installed the latest version of Nikon's Picture Project, version 1.6 which I then updated to 1.6.1.
When I try to open an 'NEF' file, I get the following error message:
'The "Nikon NEF PP" plug-in has overridden the "Camera Raw" plug-in. If you actually want to use th "Camera Raw" plug-in, you need to remove the "Nikon NEF PP" plug-in (C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe PHotoshop CS2Plug-InsAdobe Photoshop OnlyFile FormatsNikon NEF Plugin LE.8bi) from the plug-ins folder.'
If I don't do anything, Photoshop seems to hang up - nothing happens. So, I'm wondering - if Nikon deliberately puts this plug-in into the Adobe directlry, does Nikon think that I should be using their plug-in rather than Adobe's plug-in? If so, it's broken (at least for me). Before I go and delete the plug-in, does anyone have any advice about this situation? Is there something else I should do? Is Nikon's, or Adobe's plug-in for NEF files better than the other? |

| ->> I don't use PP, but Nikon View/Nikon Capture does the same thing: it installs a Nikon plug-in that supercedes Camera Raw. Nikon's plug-in SUCKS compared to Camera Raw. Get rid of that thing!!! |

| ->> Well, first of all, I "moved" the file to a new location (in case I wanted to move it back later). Now Photoshop is happy. I guess you answered my other question - if Camera Raw is better, then no need to mess around with the new plug-in. Thanks! |

| ->> Yeah!!! Right, what does Nikon know about what works best for their own NEF files!!! |

->> Louis - note that I did not say don't use Nikon's software. It's just that their NEF plug in for PS sucks. I still use Nikon Capture when I want to do serious RAW tinkering. I use Camera Raw in conjunction with Photo Shop - although, you know, what DOES Adobe know about what works best for their own program? ;-)

| ->> Have you tried Nikon NX yet? I like it so much I bought more RAM. There is a 30 day free trial for NX. |

->> Tom is correct. NX is very nice. I now use Photo Mechanic and NX.
I only use PS2 if I need to clone or to save a Nikon TIFF to a PC format TIFF before I have prints made on a Fuji Frontier 570 printer.

| ->> I have gone from a bunch of Nikon software - PP, View 6, Capture4, Capture NX etc. and find what works for me and keeps things simple is Adobe Bridge as a Browser and Camera Raw (NEF) converter and Adobe CS2 for editing ...DR |

->> Well, a few quickies... I've got Capture 4. Is Capture NX so much better? If so, why? Second, I just noticed that I've now somehow got "Adobe Bridge" on my computer - what in the world is it, and why would I want it?
I guess I've got way too much "inertia". As long as something is working, I just use it, and don't look for all kinds of new stuff.
Between Nikon, Canon, and Adobe (plus a few others) I've got way more image editing software than I know what to do with. It does bug me though that Nikon put a "filter" into the Adobe program, which "broke" things. |

->> Hello Mike,
NX will give you the best possible results from Nikon RAW images.

->> Michael,
Capture NX is worlds different from Capture 4. In just about every way, including how it was developed. Too much to mention here...but if you use RAW, it's worth a look. Ultimately, I too have decided in favor of inertia. :-) At least for now.
Adobe Bridge is Adobe's viewer/browser application. It's pretty good but it is a serious resource hog; you need reasonably powerful hardware for it to be effective. Adobe doesn't give you the option of installing it or not separately; if you install any of the Creative Suite components, you're stuck with it.
