MacBook speed?
Nathan Welton, Photographer

->> Hi -- I'm about to get a MacBook to replace my PB 1.25 G4 with 1.5 gigs of RAM. Next summer I plan on also getting a low-end MacPro once CS3 is available.

Question is will the universal version of PhotoMechanic go faster on a MB than on my PB when I'm crawling through hundreds and hundreds of RAW files? I can't standing having to wait 2-4 seconds every time I hit the delete button.

Also, will Lightroom on the MB do RAW processing faster than CS2 does on my Powerbook?

Thanks,
Nathan

->> The macbook hauls through raw files really well. Photoshop on the other hand can be slow, depending on how much work you do in it. Thankfully, you can get Lightroom or some other raw editor that's universal to work on the macbook.

I use the black MB with 1 gig of ram. If I were buying the system I would get 2 gigs. Plus it works great with a big external monitor.

->> I don't use PhotoMechanic, but I recently upgraded from a PowerBook to a MacBook and I second what Scott said. Performance is much better once you bump the RAM to 2GB. I think I paid like $250 from a third party vendor. It's not the MBPro I was originally looking at, but I was able to swap a new MB for a lens that was collecting dust so it was a great deal for me. After having the 12" PB for years I was also not liking the overall size of the MBPro's. I have a G5 at home so this is just a road machine and portability was important.

For me it does fine for parsing through images and light editing work. I'm using CS2 and before the RAM upgrade it was slow, but after, it does pretty well. It works for me...

There are two ways to work with the RAW files in PM: have PM build previews from the embedded JPEGs or generate previews from the RAW file itself. Working from the embedded JPEGs, PM will be extremely fast. Working from the RAW files directly will be slower. You'll be looking at a couple seconds or less to build a full screen preview and between a couple to maybe 5-6 seconds for a 100% zoom preview. Sometimes deleting files from the full screen preview can take a second or two (when working directly from RAW). A better approach would be to color tag the files you want to delete and then delete them in one shot after the edit.

I've been using the 2.0 MB with 2GB RAM and have been overall very happy with it's performance. I came from a 1.33 iBook and the primary reason I wanted the MB was for much faster performance with PM - and it delivers exactly that.
