| ->> So I just checked and I've got a D2H with just over 352,000 clicks on the shutter. I'm curious what everyone else's most-used camera is and how many clicks are on it. |

| ->> Geez, I thought my mileage was high. I'm pushing 130k on my beloved main, 3 year-old, D2h and about 30k on the backup D2h. The shutter life on the D2 is supposedly 150k, right? So have you had to replace your shutter yet Kenneth? Or twice? |

->> Jason, here's the freeware that I've used:
http://www.opanda.com/en/iexif/index.html
Just make sure you use a .jpg. It can't read raw files. Scroll through all the data and toward the bottom you'll see "total number of shutter releases."
I've only used it with the D2h so your mileage may vary. |

| ->> For Canon (at least for 1d) you can get this info with Photo Mechanic (current version has smaller "bug" for 1dmk2 which has more then 32.000 actuations) or with freeware ExifRead (exif field: Unknown (0093)). But I have no idea about Opanda software since I was never using it, even though I believe it can do for Canon too. |

D70/D70s, D50, D2X, D2H and later.

->> Serafin just add actuations variable to Info text and you get number of actuations for specific photo. It's 2 step process. Under Edit->Set Info Text... add this:
Actuations #: {actuations}
And after this you get number of actuations in Image Info (right mouse button click on photo and select Image Info). If you have problems setting this drop me note :) |

->> It works on 1d and 1dmk2, but I don't have other cameras, so I can't tell if it works on other cameras. Only problem might be, if you were trying this on edited photos. I just tried this on edited photo and it doesn't show actuation number (it doesn't show whole bunch of other stuff like firmware, serial #, frame # etc. either, while it still shows shutter speed, iso etc.). But on original jpegs it should work normaly even on demo version. As far as I know only difference between demo and normal version of Photo Mechanic is time limit on demo version.
PS: Ian just for your info. 4.4.3.2 has little issue which will be fixed in 4.4.3.3. On 1dmk2 which has more then 30 or 32.000 frames, it shows actuations number a but weird. It shows it like -25000 for camera with about 40.000 frames. You can get right number with substracting actuations from 65536 :) But Dennis from Camera bits wrote this "problem" is fixed already for next release. |

Probably because any time a user had a shutter fail before the published MTBF, they would expect it to be fixed for free, under warranty or not...

anyone know why Nikon can't just have the info on the camera? |

->> Chuck- Canon replaced my shutter for free on my 1D even though the camera was out of warranty without me even asking so I don't think that's it. I think they just didn't want to find a spot in their UI to show the total actuations.
When I got the shutter replaced, my camera came back saying I had already shot over 20k of images. So they did change the shutter count somehow but didn't set it back to 0. |

| ->> Since we're on shutter clicks, does anybody know of a way to determine the total on a Nikon D100? The Opanda exif viewer doesn't support that feature for that camera and shows no info on total clicks, like it does on other Nikons. |

->> The manufacturers do actually provide shutter actuations in EXIF - that's where Opanda gets it - it just isn't as easy to find as the 'everyday' stuff.
Along the same lines, Adobe Bridge, which comes bundled with most Adobe software, including Photoshop, should do the trick. Right clicked on the jpg and go to file info, advanced, exif properties.
Here's a link I think many of you will find interesting. It's essentially a database of shutter life @ #actuations. Not sure how often it's updated, and one should certainly take the info with a grain of sale, but it seems like a worthwhile project. If you're checking your shutter life, or if your shutter blows, you might want to contribute. P.S. The average numbers at the top seem practically useless and there are a number of outliers in the data sets I browsed through.
http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/sitemap.php
Finally, as far as I know, there's no way to determine the number of actuations on a D100. Someone please prove me wrong. |

->> OK,
I don't know if this has been discussed here before, but...
I just got my second lightly used MKIIn, I copied my settings from my first MKIIn, it had 160K+ Actuaciotns, I copied these actuations to my new MKIIn, now it shows the same actuations on Photomechanic as my old MKIIn.
How do I clear this?? |
