Problem with: Canon 580 flash / 400 2.8 monopod collar

->> Two quick question for everyone out there. Recently I went to use my 580 (its basically new, maybe 2 weeks old) and as I turned it on the zoom function in the strobe head made clicking noises like it was being hung up on something... The flash would function, but the zoom ability was disabled.
Now for the second problem... When I have my 400 on the monopod and rotate the lens, sometimes it binds up or even locks into place and it won't even turn. Its almost like something came loose inside and is floating around inside the collar preventing it from moving smoothly.
Has anyone ever experienced any of these types of problems before? If so please let me know. Id like to avoid sending them to CPS, but I have a feeling its inevitable.
(No I haven't dropped either the flash or lens, abused or kicked them... at least not yet.)
Thanks for your help

->> Tyler,
sounds like the zoom mechanism is stuck or possibly the gears have something jamming them. And that problem with the 400 2.8 is pretty common. There are various complaints about it, and after time, it's going to happen.

| ->> Some friends of mine in Lexington use a 400 2.8 borrowed from a very gracious friend and we have found that the same thing happens to the collar. A local expert theorized that the lens was so heavy that it was contributing to the bearings being worn faster, others speculate that it was a dropsey. The point is that it doesn't seem to uncommon for the 400 issue, and for the flash you should probably send it back for a "lemon law" refund. |

->> I'll second what Max said. It sounds like the 580 needs to go in for repair. I'm guessing it should be under warranty.
The collars on the Canon lenses have some nice & not so nice things about their designs.
My 300mm f/2.8 IS lens has a collar that will fall off if the collar is not tightened all the way. Luckily I caught the lens before it hit the ground. I thought the collar was tightened, but must have come loose.
The weight of the big glass has always been a problem with all of the lenses I have used, both Canon and Nikon. |

->> Actually Tyler, if it's 2 weeks old, call your retailer. If you bought local, then you should be able to return it (after all, it's not your fault). And even if you bought it online, the return process would probably be faster than sending it to CPS.
Of course, if you're sending your 400 as well, then CPS isn't a bad option. |
