Canon 1D MArk II issues
Jeff Fusco, Photographer

->> I have had my Canon Mark II (non N) for about 9 months.
At 7k accuations, the focusing went south.
At 11K the shutter blew.
At 17K (today) every other shot: error 99.

Went thru the drill with CPS..changed battery, card, lenses, not matter what combo, it 99's out every other shot. Even does it with no lenses on the camera. They said send it in. I treat my cameras well, shooting mainly features.

I have lost confidence in this camera. I am going to drive it in and try to get some more specifics as I really want to know whats the issue here.

Anyone out there experience the same , My 1D never even hiccuped. My back up 20D has been flawless also.

Is there a Lemon Law for Cameras? !!

->> Hey Jeff,

I just purchased a 1D Mk IIn about 4 weeks ago and have been experiencing an extraordinary amount of out of focus shots. The AE lock button seems to stick a bit, but when using the body in portrait orientation, the focusing is still slow and not very accurate. I need to give CPS a call on Monday because I can't take it any longer. Resisted calling until now since being without it for a day would really be a hardship, as my 1Ds is too slow fps-wise. Just like you though, my older body (the 1Ds) hasn't given me a single problem in over 120k actuations.

By the way, I'm two weeks out of the retailer's defective return policy so looks like I'm stuck with this lemon body. I sure had higher expectations than this!

Aloha,
Bruce

->> Bruce..
I purchased a Mark II N in March. I to had the issue with alot of out of focus shots in comparison to my old 1D's and 20 D. My problem was with the range that say a 2.8 and a 4.0 shot had with center focusing on. The range of focus was very narrow in comparison to the other bodies. Example a batter in a baseball game full frame with the focus point centered and on the middle of the player. The focus would not be sharp at all on the of the top of the frame but in focus on the bottom. That is shooting in Servo and shot verticaly. I don't have the problem shooting horizontaly. So this past week I took it to Canon in Jamesburg and they went through the whole factory spec treatment. In talking to one of the techs when I went to get it back he said the focus point is much more accurate with this new sensor than with the old meaning when shooting under 5.6 the sensor should be pointed exactly on what you want in focus or risk softness or total out of focus. The range of focus is much more exact than with the old 1D's. To me the old way was not broken so why change it. Curious to see if this is similar to your issue.

Tom

->> Hey Tom,

Thanks for sharing your info. My issues may be a bit different though, as I'm getting images that are totally out of focus. I am shooting with center focusing and wide open too though. I'll post more info as I speak with CPS.

Aloha,
Bruce

and see if there's some info to glean from it.

In particular, Thomas Witte had some sample images that were soft all the way across the frame with no focal plane. I don't remember him mentioning how the problem was resolved.

I think Bert was also seeing problems too. Maybe one or both will chime in.

->> Jeff/Bruce:

Try reintalling the latest firmwear and see if it solves the problem if you still have the camera body. I was having focus issues with all my bodies and was ready to send all my bodies after a couple of assignments earlier this month. Only about 1/3 or my images from the 4th of July coverage a couple of 5K races were tact sharp.

Before two assignments a week later (a wedding and a boxing bout on the same day, 180 miles apart) I reinstalled the firmwear and the focus issues disappeared. This past weekend I shot pics of my family and friends waterskiing with the focusing operating pefectly when I had the subject lined up with the selected sensor (that does help).

I first noticed the phenomomen with the 20D bodies after firmwear upgrades. It seemed that focusing and image sharpness improved after each upgrade. For grins I reinstalled the latest 1DM2 softwear and the issues I had where gone for while and slowly started to return until the camera was sent to Canon for repair.

Not saying this will work in each of your cases, but it is worth a try. It certainly made a difference on the three bodies that I use.

->> I have never been happy with my 18month old Mk2, it got so bad a few weeks ago I was having to prefocus for fast moving objects as the AI servo just couldn't lock on the subject.
I installed the latest firmware, was unaware of any release till I checked,(1.2.4) AND took the custom function focus sensitivity to slow. Whatderyer know it has drasticly improved my hit rate.
Are Canon going to actually admit "hey guys heres the firmware that fixes the dodgy focus issues"... no I don't think so, but the latest release although not listing any focus fix seems to have done something to my "bodily functions".
Still wouldn't trust it 100% over the 1D though.

Anyone have a 1D to sell??..I am off on a 3 day out of town shoot on Thursday with only one body at the moment..

->> Well The issue was resolved. I have to give CPS credit for the best customer service I have ever received. Sal gets a huge thank you as he saw this thru. I think Ill send them some TastyKakes

CPS basically gave me a new camera in an old body. The replaced basically every internal piece including boards, mirror box and shutter even tho the mirror box and shutter had been replaced within the last 6 months. They just wanted to be sure that any problem would be nipped and they did. Shot with it today it. Perfect.

So basically I have a body with 17K on it and all new shiny parts beneath the hood.

Thanx Canon CPS.That is just incredible service.
