Drew Carey the Photographer... on TV

Max Waugh, Photographer

->> Mr. Carey's presence on the sidelines caused such an uproar last year that I'm surprised nobody has mentioned that he has a new show on the Travel Channel (debuted tonight) that follows him around as he shoots soccer games in Europe... presumably culminating in his experiences at the World Cup.
I have yet to see it (though I did record it out of curiosity), but I'll be interested to see how much focuses on the sport and cultural experiences and how much it bothers with the photography aspect.
Good luck to Drew and the US Team. I'm looking forward to several pre-dawn jaunts to the local English pub in the next few weeks.

->> I saw a late night interview of Mr. Carey discussing his world cup soccer shooting and his travel channel show. I believe that the show is going to focus more on the Travel, getting around, and more touristy aspects. It is the Travel Channel after all.
They also showed a few of his images during the interview, and there is no doubt that Drew Carey is a competent Soccer photographer. |

Definitely not a flattering picture of either of us... but here I am, posting it on SportsShooter.

One year the wife and I went as Drew and Mimi to a Halloween party so I have a pair of those fake glasses too now. ;) I even made a Bunch of Buzz Beer lables to put on our beer bottles. |

->> I watched the show last night, it was mostly about the spanish society craze around football. Barcelonia vs Real Madrid and the history behind it. They showed some of the turist attractions. His shooting the game was a very small part 2 or 3 minutes loading gear in his Backpack and a few scenes of him shooting. They showed a few of his stills, not bad stuff. Over all the show was just ok imo as a travel show junkie. |

->> Greetings from Munich
Here's the scoop - I'm shooting the show "Drew Carey's "Sporting Adventures:The World Cup" for The Travel Channel here in Germany for the next month. Drew is shooting some games and inbetween he gives his take on traveling in Germany.
The dates of the series are June 15, 22, 29 and July 6 with a special live webcast after that. 8pm - (check your local listings of course!)
We've been in Berlin and Munich for the past week and today are going back north for his first game to shoot.
As some may know Drew took the Platypus Workshop in March, which was a fun experience for all (and yes, I showed him NO MERCY). Great guy to work with and very down to earth - plus his photographs are pretty good. He's very passionate about photography and getting better at it (I'm still hoping to get better at it!).
It's been fun & easy working with Drew. I hope you all tune in. A fun show and funny at times. I saw a rough cut last night and we laughed in the edit room.
Live from Germany,

It was really fun seeing (ever so briefly) SportsShooter.com member and International Sports Images owner John Todd (who Drew is shooting for) walking into the USA game with Drew. I enjoyed the program and look forward to future shows as the World Cup progresses and Drew shoots more games.
I gotta tell you- Drew deserves a medal for having to spend so much time with PF :-) |

->> Greetings from Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
I've had the chance to watch Drew work over the last few matches and I can tell you that he is as serious and professional as anyone out there. It's clear to me that he is out there to do a job and not out to take snap shots.
I spent a few minutes talking to him before the USA-Czech Republic match. He told me that this is something that he always wanted to do, but never thought that he would actually be at the World Cup shooting. I asked him if he ever visits SportsShooter and he says he does from time to time.
He keeps a low profile at the matches. It's obvious that he doesn't really want to be noticed and, since he's in Europe, most people don't. |

P.F. are you shooting video with a Sony Z1U HDV? If you do are you enhancing your personal comfort with an after market support (like by varizoom)? Have alot of fun. |

To answer some probing questions found on Sports Shooter:
Yes,that is the Airport Addicted Bag with wheels on it.
Drew uses Canon and does have a LensBaby.
I 'm using the Sony Z1U and and the show is being shoot in HD but outputted in SD.
Special to Brad Mangin: Anyone deserves a medal for hanging out with me for 40 days straight!
On the tech side: This is being shot and edited in 6 days. The editors finish the show tonight and upload it Wednesday morning. Discovery (parent company of the Travel Channel) tweeks the audio mix Wednesday afternoon and it airs the next day! This has pushed to edge on how TV is produced. All of it edited by three unbelieveable guys on Apple MacBook Pros, in hotel rooms and upload via satilite and FTP.
Keep those cards and letter coming. Next show is this Thursday night 9pm Travel Channel.
Be there. Aloha. |

Are the remote editors uploading *video* from the hotels, or are they just uploading a file with the video offline which the guys at Discovery online with tapes that have been shipped ahead? |

They use FTP & at times satelitte to output the files and satel No tapes fly anywhere.
All Discovery does is tweek the audio and airs it. Pretty on edge as the files come in Wednesday and it airs the next day.
Yesterday we needed a quick Drew voice-over and did it in a parked car on the street in Cologne. It then was digititized on the spot with a laptop using Final Cut Pro and sent FTP to drop into the show!
2nd show airs tomorrow night (Thursday) at 9pm.

He talked about how great the site is, the talent of the members, the information available to anyone who wants to learn about sports and photojournalism, and what a great resource this site is for anyone wanting to learn more about pro shooting.
Thanks to John Todd at International Sports Images, I was able to get in touch with Drew Carey for a podcast interview for my magazine, www.PopPhoto.com. Drew took a few minutes out of his day yesterday, while editing his take to talk to me about his experience of shooting the World Cup.
