->> New higher capacity battery looks promising. Especially since it'll work with all D2 series. Not that I've ever had a problem with the 1300 average frames I get on one charge now anyway.
And this is overdue: "The sensor cleaning mode of the D2Xs, in which the mirror and shutter remain open, no longer requires the camera be connected to an external power source such as the EH-6 AC Adapter."
No official mention off this beast's release on Nikon's site yet. |

->> John, it could explain the $500 rebate that's already been in place for a while. It expires June 30, 2006, which is right around the time the article says the D2Xs will start to hit the streets.
One thing you can bet is that there will be several old X's pop up on the used market as the docs and dentists all unload to get the latest and the greatest. ;) |

->> One wonders what all the "stealth upgrades" under the hood might be as well. At face value, it's not a huge change (how could the greatest Nikon ever made possibly be better?) but it's just enough to rekindle sales at the pro (and doctor-dentist) level. Great move by Nikon; they are capturing more and more market-share these days. Clearly high-ISO remains the one weak area on the camera, but the stepped-ISO settings should help. I've found the noise characteristics to be easily managed in post-processing. And here's the part I really liked:
"Updated to perform even faster and with greater precision in the D2xs, the 11-area AF system employs Nikon's advanced Multi-CAM 2000 AF Sensor Module."
Faster and more accurate AF?! You gotta be kidding me! My shooting percentage is so high already with the D2X that it's hard to imagine a DSLR tracking fast action better than this: http://dmtimaging.com/infineonama2006.htm
Well, maybe I can turn "lock-on" back on now. Heck, I might even start using the HSC mode (with the new viewfinder blackout arrangement) once-in-a-while. The color-calibrated LCD is very welcome as well (although there may be some concerns about its relative brightness as usual, we'll see). The battery is already the best of any digital camera on the market, and now it’s so over-the-top, it’s just silly. Plus, really cool new software is also on tap: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0606/06060101nikonsoftware.asp
And no more AC Adapter needed for my Sensor Brush. Sweet!
Really great job by Nikon. Nice package. |

| ->> I got to use the D2X during SSA II. Thanks Ron. I am a Canon shooter and I really liked the D2x and its high-speed crop mode. It looks like the mask isn't totally opaque but I Iiked being able to see things coming and going out of frame. |

->> The refinements to the high-speed crop mode only further convince me that the Nikon D3 will be a full-frame camera with a special "DX" high-speed crop mode...maybe 20MP full frame and 10 or 12MP cropped.
Nikon will thus be able to go full frame without "abandoning" the DX standard they've publicly committed to. |

->> Something just hit me... it's the D2"XS". Excess!! Get it? Funny one Nikon. Their tag line should be: It's more camera than you'll ever need... the Excess!
Sorry gang. Slow day in the newsroom. |

->> There is really no reason to upgrade from the D2X to the D2Xs. Today Nikon announced that most of the upgrades the D2Xs has over the D2X will be available in a firmware upgrade for the D2X.
Those upgrades are:
-In-camera trimming function
-Autofocus algorithm improvements
-Metering of the capture area only Hi-Speed Crop mode
-Adjustable delay for Focus Tracking with Lock-on
-Additional ISO increments between 800 and HI-1 (ISO 1600)
-Maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed options added to Auto ISO feature
-Black and white mode
-Ability to use the sensor cleaning mode when the camera is powered by the battery exclusively
-Files will be verifiable with Nikon's upcoming Image Authentication Software
And if you really want the greyed out area while using the HSC mode, you can pick up Nikon's Type W III Focusing Screen.
The firmware upgrade is scheduled for the fourth quarter of this year. |

->> I see no reason why they would continue to sell the D2X after the introduction of the D2Xs.
And if the firmware upgrade rumor reported on Galbraith turns out to be true, it's highly unlikely they will slash prices on the D2X to clear out inventory. It will be more like the D70 situation...a slow transition to a better body. There may be some bigger rebates or discounts, but nothing drastic I'd warrant. A firmware upgrade pretty much covers most of the modifications. |

->> Why won't anyone (Nikon or Canon) come out with auto IPTC captioning.
How valuable would it be to have all of your images INCLUDE your own copyright and even taking that idea even further, why couldn't there be an option to have images have copyright notices permanently embedded via PC software?
It would also be nice to be able to add other IPTC info on a shoot by shoot basis. If you're going to be shooting an all day event, it'd be nice to have all the general IPTC info embedded to the photos at the time of capture and then all you have to do is go back and add the caption.
Didn't the old Kodak dSLR's do that? |

->> I don't want to sound like a smartass at ALL, but Nikon cameras already come with that option Michael... It's kinda buried in the menus, but you can set a custom note to be applied to the IPTC info of every picture taken with the camera. Every image shot with my rig has a "(C) Nic Hume, 2006" note attached to it.
There's no option yet for more advanced stuff, but you can certainly put a copyright tag in...

Thanks guys!
And I'll bet Nikon put a patent on that so WE can't have it for years!
Here's to hoping one of, if not both of them, will add full IPTC functionability someday. |
