Does anyone use their camera to download their cards?

->> I switched from PC to Mac recently and since my MacBook doesn't have a PCMCIA slot, I can't use my Delkin 32 bit reader.
I want to buy a USB or Firewire card reader that is small but takes CF and SD cards (I have a 1DMkIIN). But until I buy one, I was kind of using the camera to download the images.
Here's the question: Is a Mark II as fast as a regular Firewire reader? Seems pretty fast to me.
Can anyone recommend a compact reader, not some 15-in-1 bulky thing?
When I plug the camera to my Mac, it doesn't show up as a drive in Photo Mechanic (or on my desktop for that matter). Can you use PM to ingest from a Camera? Keep in mind I am new to Mac ;-)
Thanks, |

->> David,
I use SanDisk's 12 in 1 card reader. I know you said you don't want a 15 in 1 but this thing is pretty slim when you remove the optional vertical stand (supplied with it). It's about the size of a credit card when you have the stand removed. The thickness, about the height of a dime. The good thing about my Sandisk is that it reads my Lexar cards flawlessly. When I've used Lexar's CF card readers they don't like my SanDisk CF cards. So it's better compatibility with SanDisk. The SD card slot works great too. Hope this helps.

Since the vast majority of your work will be on CF cards I'd suggest a Lexar Firewire CF Card reader (http://www.lexar.com/readers/firewire.html). It's small, fast and only $40 or so. If it happens that you need to download something from the SD card then use the camera for that. |

->> I'd second the use of the Sandisk 12-in-1. I happen to have all three - the Delkin Cardbus reader, the SanDisk, and the Lexar Firewire. The Cardbus wins hands-down for speed, but the Lexar and SanDisk are pretty close and the SanDisk far less tempermental than the Lexar.
Make sure you get the most recent 12-in-1, the one with the button. The button itself is pretty useless, but that version is significantly faster.
Galbraith is a good resource for card reader info. www.robgalbraith.com. |

| ->> Thanks guys for the tips. Looks like the 12-in-1 is the best solution. |
