Free exif reader that shows total actuations
Scott Morgan, Photographer

->> I thought it might be interesting to any of you out there to know how many total actuations your camera has made. It could be useful if you are buying a new camera or are just curious. As far as I know, it's Mac only.

You can download the program free at
http://homepage.mac.com/aozer/EV/index.html

All you do is drop a jpeg on it and it will show all the metadata included with the file with a description. It shows all the info, not just actuations, including many that don't show up in photoshop or anywhere else that I've seen.

->> I'll ask an exif question while the topic is out right now...when I use an exif reader on a jpeg from my 1D, it seems like only have around 25k actuations...when I am definately sure I reset my counter around 5-6 times since I've owned it. The Y value is 1, so I am not sure how to find the actual actuations. help?

thanks,

JL

->> I'm not sure I understand where the actuations # is located. I think I figured it out. My camera makes folders of 100 images, and then gives each image a # within that folder. This meta-data program says "Image Number" and lists a three-digit # followed by a "-" and then a four-digit number (example Image Number: 644-4432). For the example # I provided, would that mean my # of actuations was 64,432?

->> It could be that, but I have rolled the counter on my old D30 over atleast twice this means when you get to 999-9999 it flips back to 001-0001 so depending on how old your camera is then that could be accurate, or it could be a lot more.

I think that you want to look at the very bottom of the list and find the line called Actuation Multiplier.

If all of this info holds true then my cameras have the following

20D- 9 months old 52,680
20D- 2 months old 8,525
D30- 6? +/- years old didn't work... but I'd love to find something that would actually tell me how much I've beaten this camera into the ground.

->> there is 2 numbers on the list, one needs to use the multiplier which is like 30000 frames or something like that i thought, but if my camera is an example it is actually around 65500.

look under image specific properties and there is category called camera actuations. it is the actual number of frames shot unless the acutation counter has been reset (mine was during a repair a while back) .

down under other properties u have the mulitplier and actuation counter. to use it take =(actuation multiplier x 65000)+actuation counter and u get roughly the camera actuations in the image specific properties section above.

it has pretty well work 5 of my 1d and 4 mark ii's. it doesnt show a number on my d30's images i have pulled up recently. canon was able to give me a number on the d30 thru their computer programs and machines at cps.

I have had the camera since July 2003 but i do not use it everyday and to be honest i did not use it all from March of last year to Jan of 2006 becuase i was provided my equipment at an internship.

->> I can't get the EXIF viewer to read actuations on my 20D, but in Photo Mechanic it says I have 1757551 for actuations. Since this camera is less than a year old and seldom used, I find that number to be highly unlikely. It must break down somehow. I would guess the real number to be 7551.

"Camera Actuations: 2"

And that's just plain wrong. Am I looking in the right place?

->> It worked before... but now that my 20d just blew the shutter and I want to check on actuations its not working, and giving some really odd numbers.

On the last frame the camera shot before dying the numbers were
Actuation Counter: 65
Actuation Multiplier: 7044

65 x 7044= 457806?

However if I back up to the first image on the card the numbers are:
Actuation Counter: 178
Actuation Multiplier: 6979

178 X 6979= 1262242

so why is the first photo on the card higher than the last? Am I doing this wrong? Whats up? This really isn't something that I have to know, I'd just like to see what the MTBF was for the body, so I know when to possibly expect it from my other body.

->> Super Duper Cool!!! :-)

24850 on one body..

33957 on the other..

On my 5D it says I have only 25.. I believe I have about 50,000

I also noticed that the sensor iso is measured differently.. it says 288, when I was set to iso 1600.. hmm.. interesting..

Thanks.. at least it works on the MkII bodies I have.. :-)
