->> I need a new laptop very soon. I have a PowerBook G4 and was looking at purchasing a new MacBook by Monday but I keep hearing that the old software runs slow because of the new chip or that Photoshop is not available until next year, etc.
Whats the real deal with the machine.
.......I'm not switching to PC.

->> The deal is that Photoshop CS2 runs a bit slower on the Intel chips. Whether that will affect you depends a lot on what you do with Photoshop. Are you a heavy user, applying a lot of CPU intense adjustments? Or do you just do basic toning and cropping? If the latter, then you probably won't notice a huge difference.
If it's going to be your primary machine and you'll do a lot of heavy Photoshop work with it, I would still suggest you get a Mac with the Intel chip. It only makes sense because eventually everything will be written for those chips and will run a lot faster. For example, based on what Kirk Baker at Camerabits reports about Photo Mechanic, now that it's a universal application, it runs faster on the MacBook Pro than on his G5 dual processor...
So, yes, Photoshop may be a bit slower, but by next year CS3 will be out.
The other option in the meantime is to install Apple's Boot Camp, which allows you to boot Window XP. Apparently Photoshop running on XP through Boot Camp is plenty fast. Sure it means using Windows... but at least your computer won't be a "PC."

Also search the archive here. I think Monty Rand brought started a similar thread.
Personally, I'm holding out for the MacBook (iBook replacement). |

->> jeff here is something else to consider, intel is introing a new chip tomorrow or tuesday that is gonna replace the pentium chip. the apple rumor boards have it going in the macbooks within a month. here is an article i ran across in my stock research (i am an apple stockholder) that says maybe all the new 17" will come with the new chip in it. i am not sure because the article is confusing but you can read it for yourself.

->> Vern,
Are they going to put it in the 15 inch? The 17 inch is a little too big for me.
I own stock in Apple as well. Hopefully all these new chips and new products and ipods can make the stock price go up. I've been riding this ipod thing since the very beginning several years ago and it has been great.

->> "the only mac worth buying is a MBP the rest are going to be useless rather soon"
Ha! Ha I say! I recently got a great deal on a new 15 inch Powerbook G4 that will run all of the software THAT I ALREADY OWN quite quickly. It'll be well into 2008 before you'll be able to pay Adobe another $200 for CS3 and, perhaps, another 3-6 months before the bugs are out of CS3 and it's worth paying the extra $200 for. I have a built in modem (still useful on the road) some ports and slots that actually have things available for them and a very nice screen. No built-in camera but I don't care about a built-in camera.
My new machine will function very nicely for the next 3 years at which time I'll buy the just-discontinued 15 inch version of the MacPro III...
Trailing Edge Technology... It WORKS! |

| ->> i actually have read some more info today. the intel chip while introduced this week will not be available till august supposedly. the macbook (no pro) the intel version of the ibook will be introduced on tuesday according to everyone. The new intel chip will be put in everything as it replaces the pentium but as to the upgrade on macbook pro, it is anybody guess when it goes in them but i figure it will be july at the earliest. |

->> Jim where did you see CS3 was coming out in 2008? Any half reliable sources I've read have been saying Q2 2007, with the less reliable ones saying the end of this year.
The last generation powerbook it is generally agreed was slow in comparison to what else is available on the market. I know our 1 GHz 17" is acceptable on location occasionally although most times it's just annoyingly slow. I agree Jim in buying trailing edge tech for the most part, but I don't feel that this is one of those times, the leap forward was a great one. |

->> From the rumors I've heard (read: RUMORS), CS3 has been ramped up for Universal Binary version release in late 2006. I think some people here are just a little codgerly...
Apple thinks everyone will own their products for 2 years then upgrade. That's not true for all of us, especially the ones who have been around a while. But the transition is a good one, Intel seems to have a really progressive roadmap and I appreciate that Apple isn't ready to settle for conventional wisdom. Jobs can distill anything to it's useful essence, and we all benefit. I try not to be a kool-aid drinker, but after using both platforms (well, actually more than just the two), I really appreciate what Steve does in terms of making technology work for people, instead of the other way around. |

| ->> The real story is that they rock. I love mine and have had no issues at all with it. The new 17 inch is nice, but I'm very happy with my 15 and wouldn't want a larger screen. |
