Powerbook not recognising CF Cards
Neil Turner, Photographer
London | UK | United Kingdom | Posted: 5:50 AM on 04.29.06
->> My two year old Mac Powerbook 15" 1.5 Ghz which has given faultless service since it arrived has stopped recognising CF cards in any of my card readers. I have a Lexar Firewire 400, a Delking Carbus and a cheap USB2 as well. Each of these readers worked fine until yesterday and since then none have. I guess that there is some preference or security option on my Mac that I have inadvertently changed. Any ideas?

->> Hello Neil Turner,

If you insert your card into the USB card reader and then plug the card reader into the USB port, do you see the information about the USB card in the Contents:Hardware:USB Device Tree area of the System Profiler?

->> It may seem too basic to mention but have you rebooted your machine. Mine is hardly ever off - just in sleep, and from time to time minor gliches turn up and most are solved by a reboot.

Good luck

Chris

->> Neil,
As an aside, are you using Lexar cards in Lexar readers?
Whenever I try SanDisc cards in Lexar readers, I get no recognition.
SanDisc in generic readers perform as expected.

Have you tried repairing your disk permissions?

->> Apologies for the delay in getting back to you all. The good news is that I now have a Powerbook that recognises CF cards and that I have completely rebuilt my Disc Permissions not once but three times!

The problem turns out to have been a rogue Lexar card that managed to screw up my permissions every time that I inserted it. It took a while to work out that it always happened with this single card and none of the other three new ones from the same batch. Any subsequent card that was inserted failed to show up anywhere using any of may various card readers and cardbus adapters. I had tried new leads and all sorts of tricks.

Thanks to everyone who responded and especially to Michael who provided the cure.

For your information the rogue card was a Lexar 1 gig 133X code 39651GBAB0506CDC3 which is being replaced by the dealer.

->> Trevor:

Go to Disk Utilities (HD>Applications>Utilities), select your hard drive and click on the First Aid tab. Then click on repair permissions.

As an alternative, download the program Macaroni (
http://www.atomicbird.com/) and you can schedule it to automatically run a series of programs (including permissions) to keep your Mac in good shape.

->> I found that I needed to manually click "mount disk" on the CF card icon that showed up in disk permissions on the first CF that I used after making the repair. After that, all of my CF cards showed up on the desktop and (more importantly) were automatically ingested by Photo Mechanic.
