->> I don't think Aperture will be discontinued. I use the program on a daily basis and while it is a bit slow on my PowerBook, it has a lot of potential. After Apple begins using Intel processors with virtualization technology, I'll be getting a MacBook, and I doubt speed will be much of an issue at that point.
I've also tried Adobe's Light Room beta and although that program has potential as well, I think I'll be sticking with Aperture. If I'm really short for time, I'll use Photo Mechanic - nothing compares as far as speed is concerned – right now at least. |

thanks. i'll be here all week folks. |

->> I posted in the other Aperture thread that this strikes me as a case of a major revision has been shipped and resources being shifted to other products for the time being. The /. link I posted stated that several dev's left the team for better positions within Apple or went back to the team they were poached from.
With that said, has anyone had time to process any raw files through 1.1? Is it better than 1.0 and the subsequent updates? I'm interested in trying it again but I'd like to hear what others say before plunking down $299.
(Apple would be smart to offer a fully functioning tryout version of Aperture. They probably wouldn't have half the haters and bad press had they done that to begin with.) |

->> Keep in mind the story comes from ONE rumor site that has got a lot of stories right but also got a lot of stories wrong and is being sued by Apple. That last point may explain why "Think Secret" took a little information (assuming that's correct) and reached the worst possible conclusion.
It IS possibility true that some of the underline code is a mess resulting in a delay reaching their 2.0 goal while they do a major rewrite and explain changing engineering teams (which I understand is not all that uncommon)
Bob,
Yes, I've been using Aperture full time for more than three month's now. (with the exception of night Lakers and Clippers games) It works well on my G4 PowerBook with only 1 gig of ram. I like it so much that I'm willing to put up with some of its shortcomings and a few spinning rainbow icon balls.
See my post about Aperture 1.0 on - http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=19780
I like the 1.1 update. Previews are almost instantaneous, even in full screen mode. The value of seeing fast and sharp RAW previews when editing a shoot cannot be overstated. (That's my biggest complaint with Photo Mechanic) Gone is the delay on import before the first photos start to show up. It still takes too long to import photos, but it is faster. The whole program seems snappier. Here's hoping a 2.0 code rewrite makes the program more acceptable for photographers in general and not just Aperture fans like me.
Also thanks Bob for the SlalshDot link. |

->> Steven,
I was able to do some conversions with 1.1 today and compare them to ACR and Canon DPP and I have to say Aperture has come a long way. The conversions still aren't as good as DPP but neither are Adobe's. The nice thing is that Aperture will hand off conversions to your favorite raw work tool so that's a plus. For those not having a clue about workflow Aperture is probably a good investment.
Not sure if anyone has messed with the latest version of Adobe Lightroom but I'm really impressed with the conversion tools. You have a ton of control in the converter - way more than any other raw converter I've used. DPP is still better but not by much. If the price is right (bundle?) I'll be throwing more money Adobe's way. |
