Photo Mechanic Problem

->> I just upgraded to the Mac G5 running OX 10.4.2, and using the latest version of Photo Mechanic. When I tag photos and then select tagged to move to a new folder, ALL the tagged images totally disappear. While moving to the new folder, the finder icon on the bottom toolbar bounces up & down..but the images that were moved have totally vanished from the computer. Does anyone know what is going on and where they are going to? And how to fix this?
THANKS |

| ->> I am using Photo Mechanic 4.2.1-the same version I was using with my G4 running 10.3.8, and everything worked flawlessly |

| ->> I've had this same problem, both on my G4 Powerbook and on a G3 tower running OS 10.4 and 10.3 respectively and with different versions of Photo Mechanic. After it happened a few times at seemingly random intervals I gave up on trying to move files using PM. I was never able to find/recover any of the lost images. If anyone else has the answer I'd be all ears as well. |

->> Did you guys try posting to the Rob Galbraith PM forum? The guy who writes the PM program answers questions all the time and maybe he can help. He is pretty quick about it too.
Good luck |

->> I just posted this major problem to the PM forum. Let's hope there is a quick solution. 3x last night I had to rework images that were lost in the move..and are still nowhere to be found. It's as if they went thru the Bermuda Triangle of my new G5.
VERY WEIRD!
Alan-what do you do since you can't move the files? Did you stop using PM?

->> I don't have an answer for you, but I do have another way of doing things...
Instead of using the tag feature, try using the color feature. When browsing through the images just hit any number from 1-9 to assign the image a color, then once you have your selects, select all images of that color and copy to the folder you need.
It's like Photoshop in that there are many ways to do the same thing. |

->> Steve,
I just tried assigning a color and when I went to move them to a new folder, the same thing happened. The finder icon bounced up, and the images totally vanished..no where to be found on the computer. |

->> ok all..Nick from Scotland on the PM forum of Rob Galbraith's site posted this
"Quote:

(i) The bouncing dock Finder icon means Finder is trying to tell you anything. Are there any message windows open when you click on it ?
(ii) What is the second pulldown menu at the top of your Photo Mechanic contact sheet set at (All/Selected/Tagged/Untagged) ?
ETA - (iii) What does Spotlight say when you search under one of the 'lost' filenames ?
I went to the finder, clicked on it to find I never registered for a mac.com email address. Once I said I was not interested in one at this time, EVEYTHING went back to normal and I am now able to move images to a new folder once I tag them.
Still have no clue where all the images are that I worked on last night.
Alan-I hope this helps you too.

->> One more thing....Kirk Baker, who wrote PM is just AMAZING. He already sent me a reply. I have just updated to PM 4.3.8
HE is the reason why PM is so successful. This man is a true class act, and always on top of any issues we photographers have.
And I just love Photo Mechanic.

->> I overslept and missed the rest of the conversation!
Just so you know Debra I never stopped using PM, although I did stop using it to move files. If I need to move files i control-click on "reveal in finder" and copy them directly from the original folder. Since I'm not normally sorting images in this manner on deadline it's never really slowed me down. Slightly less convenient but still woth it since PM is so fast.
Did Kirk Baker explain what underlying issue causes the problem? I'll be sure to try out your method.
Thanks. |

->> Kirk was kind enough to send me this explanation:
Hello Alan,
The problem was with version 4.2.1 in that it had a bug where if
the Finder displayed any kind of message (informational or error)
then the files would get deleted from the source folder, but
would not have been copied to the destination folder. I found a
workaround (a fix) and it was repaired in the 4.3.x series, version
4.3.8 being the latest version. Anyone having this problem with
the 4.2.x series of Photo Mechanic is entitled to a free upgrade
to 4.3.8.
You are welcome to post this message in its entirety.
Kind regards,
-Kirk
