->> looked around on the threads for this, couldn't find what I was looking for. I need to get a portable hard drive for class, not one to like upload CF cards on or anything fancy, just a small, reliable, durable pocket hard drive under $100 and 2gb or bigger to take my photos from the lab to my room without burning CDs all the time.
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance

->> Lexar and Sandisk (among others) make self-contained USB "thumb" drives in 2GB sizes. They're solid state (similar to CF chips), but plug directly into a USB port and are readable/writeable by Macs and PCs.
They're very convenient. I have a 512MB unit that's great for throwing documents and files on when moving them from machine to machine. |

| ->> We use SmartDisk Firelite drives here at work and I use them at home. Bus powered (meaning no power cord) and alot of space for the money. They are very handy in the field for extra space or back ups. I set Photo Mechanic to ingest to a folder on my laptop and another folder on my SmartDisk drive. B&H has an 80GB $189.95, a 60GB for $159.95 or a 40GB for $129.95 (they also have larger sizes for over $200). We have about 8 or 9 of them around work and have yet to have one die after more then 2 years of service. |

->> Josh,
My students and I use self-powered hard drives from Beyondmicro.com. They produce a great self-powered drive. When I was at NAB last year, they had a show special for a 100GB firewire/USB2 combo for $150. I snapped it up. Works great. Here is there USB version.
I strongly recommend them. I also have a SmartDisk Firelite 60GB. I use both on a daily basis. I do feel the BeyondMicro case is more durable.

I second (or third) the node for the Firelite hard drive. I have the 80Gb one but you can pick up a 40 Gb drive for $125 or so. |
