->> I'm in the process of installing software on my new Macbook and I started wondering what software everyone else uses. I have the following software installed, but was wondering if there are any other must have apps aside from the apple apps that come pre-installed and the ones listed below.
Photo Mechanic
PS CS2
Transmit
Photo Rescue

->> Looking through Joshua's list, I'll second his recommendations for FireFox (and add the Web Developer's Toolbar plugin), SpamSieve, and Toast (for better/easier CD/DVD burning).
I'll also recommend looking at the beta of Adobe's LightRoom. It's probably not available for the Intel-based PowerBooks yet as it's still in beta, but jump on it when it revs to a suitable version. |

| ->> You might consider Mac The Ripper or DVDBackup to rip a DVD to your hard drive to watch on a long flight. Thumb up for Toast, Firefox and Disk Warrior. |

| ->> Actually, LightRoom is available for Intel Macs with the latest beta release - its Universal. And it looks like it'll be a great tool. |

| ->> I recently began using LiquidCD, a free (or rather donationware) program that replaces Toast. It does everything I need it to do. Its pretty much a knock-off of Toast but doesn't have a couple features like "compare." But hey, its free. |

| ->> Will Lightroom run on OS 10.3 Panther. I saw that you needed Tiger, but was wondering if anyone who has not upgraded was using it. |

->> Great suggestions. Thanks. Some of these apps I do have, but some of the ones I don't have are very cool.
Thanks again. |

->> Monty, I think your list of must-haves is mostly complete. The only other software I might classify as a must-have is Diskwarrior but you don't have to actually install it--just have the CD handy.
Most everything else is not essential if you want your machine to be a "work" machine with the least amount of complexity. In fact I tend to think some of the extras suggested, particularly the "cosmetic enhancement" software, can create problems down the road. |
