->> I am about to upgrade from OS 10.2.8 to whatever the newest one is. I will download it from the Apple website or go buy it in the morning. any thing I should know? I remeber there being some firewire extrenal drive issue., have these been fixed?
Obviously I will back up everything before I do this. I am much more computer literate than most people, but years ago when I switched up to OS9 it caused all kinds of problem on my old G3. So I thougth I'd ask some of you if you had any hints.
I am using a PB 1 gig processor and 1 gig of ram.
Thanks in advance.

->> Well going from 10.2.8 to anything before 10.4 won't be a problem. Jumping to 10.4.X shouldn't be a problem in regards to data integrity, however you may want to make sure of all of your software versions. I only use Photo Mechanic, Photoshop, Word, Excel and CuteFTP; so I didn't run into any real issues.
The only thing that was a roadblock for awhile was that my OKI laser printer didn't have any 10.4.X compatible network drivers, but they have since written some.
I wouldn't be worried. (I'd still back up any images to DVD though...) |

->> Peter,
Use the Software Update function from System Preferences so you have the most up-to-date pre-Tiger version before upgrading to 10.4.x
I recently upgraded to Tiger and had no problems.

->> The only problem I have run into since upgrading to 10.4, and I don't know that it has anything to do with the upgrade, is that I can no longer print or make pdf's from Fotobiz. The software still works and I am able to print and make pdf's from every other program. I have the same configuration as you, PB 1g w/ 1g ram.
I emailed back and forth with Cradoc for awhile trying to sort it out with no luck, then got sidetracked with some personal stuff. I really should get back on that!
Good luck. |

| ->> I did have an issue with PhotoMechanic when I upgraded to 10.4, apparently the codec changed from 10.3.9 so I had to upgrade to a newer version of PM. I am currently running version 4.3.8 of PM with no problem, but I'm not sure the minimum version of PM that will run on 10.4.x? I am currently on an ibook G4 993mhz with 640mb of ram with no problem. The other software that I had swiched fine, including Adobe Creative Suite Pro, Macromedia Studio Pro MX 2004, Office 2004, Toast Titanium 6, and Fetch. The only other thing I had a problem with, was Quicktime Pro, because I didn't want to spend the money to upgrade to the new ProHD, and I had some issues with the older version of QT Pro, but for the life of me I can't remember what. |

One thing about Tiger that really p**sed me off is that the DVDPlayer in 10.4 no longer plays Video_TS files. What I like to do before a trip is rip a few movies to my Powerbook's hard drive for viewing on the plane as reading from the HD takes less battery power than reading from a DVD drive. When I'm done with the movie I trash the files. Can't do that with Tiger.... |

->> Jim,
Strange you're having that problem. I have about 10 DVDs ripped onto my XServe here, and on my desktop (OS 10.4.5) I have no problem using DVD Player to select the VIDEO_TS folder and play a movie from it. They stream just fine over the network from the server. I'm sure they'd work fine from the local disk as well...so I don't think it's a Tiger issue. |

| ->> My only problems were with my VPN software for server interfaces at work and Toast 6 not having full utilization. Also, Norton doesn't work at all now. But the rest is fine. |
