Photoshop question
Monty Rand, Photographer
Bangor | ME | USA | Posted: 7:48 AM on 02.08.06
->> I used to have an action set-up that would take my camera JPEGS resize them, sharpen and then save themselves over the original file. However, I can't seem to remember how I made the action so the file saved over itself without any dialog boxes opening up. Anybody have any idea on how to do this? Thanks.

->> It's part of Photoshop's Batch dialog or when you create a droplet.

Otherwise you have to tell it to "Save As" while you're scripting the the action and to let it overwrite, but the Batch dialog will still act as a master setting.

I suggest changing the workflow strategy to not do a destructive write. Have the action open images from one folder and write to another. You don't need to worry about overwriting then and your originals are not modified. Also, you know if there's a potential collision if Photoshop asks you whether it should over write so you can stop and see what's going on.

Make sure you have your "save as" included in your action, then when you run the batch you must click the "Override action 'save as' commands" button.

Greg, I do it this way because some days I have 10 folders with 400+ photos in each of them. I just drag the folder onto the droplet and all the photo are made smalller overwriting the original and then I can take them and upload them to Photoreflect. These image are my back-up images. It would add a ton of time to have to babysit the process and then copy them all back to the right folders.

->> Monty, just curious why would you want to save over your original image, especially when batch producing photos? I hope you are working from a copy of the original, you always want to practice non-destructive editing.

->> You can also set the action to run through the sizing, toning, etc. and then stop at the Save As dialog box. Then you can input a new name and location to save.

->> Monty,

Also, why do you need to sharpen the images if they are going up on photoreflect? I wouldn't bother with the sharpen since you are resizing them to a 400x600 (or 600x400) image anyway. You can use photo mechanic to resize w/o opening them in PS.

Stew, yes I don't sharpen for PR, but I also use this action for other things and I add the sharpening. I'll play with photo mechanic and see what that can do for me. I wasn't aware that PM did a resizing. That would be great.

Thanks for all the tips.

In PM 4.3 and above, you can resize images when you "save images as..." a dialog box comes up with all the options you want.

cheers,

You can do a whole ton of stuff with PM... cropping, resizing, rotating, export to web gallery, ftp.... just not tone/color adjustments (fine by me).

It's extremely powerful for captioning and there are lots of captioning short cuts you can have set in your IPTC templates to automatically add certain information. Plus, with 4.1.1 you should check out the code replacement feature. It looks to be very promising if you currently spend a lot of time IDing players in your captions.

Check out the PM forum over at Rob Galbraith.

Which CameraBits did by design. You have to fight the program to do things that risk losing your images.
