Save For Web, No IPTC info?

->> Your thoughts on using Save For Web in Photoshop for web page photos and having a file that is smaller by 1/2 - 2/3 with no IPTC info, or a larger file that does have IPTC info for more "protection" from unlawful use.
Web photos should be sRGB, correct?
Thanks in advance.

->> It all depends on what you need...do you need the IPTC data? Honestly...IPTC won't stop 99.9999% of the image thieves out there. They don't even know what IPTC is!!!
Legal protection is obtained by registering your copyright, not by adding IPTC data.
Remember...if you put it on the internet it can be stolen.

->> The more things that you can do online to identify the image as yours and notify of its copyright, the better off you are in being able to prove willfull infringement if/when you get to any litigation. Think of things like:
IPTC data - with copyright noted, name, website, contact info, etc...
Identifying watermark embedded in jpeg with your name
Right click disable so they have to work a bit more to grab an image
Copyright notice on page or at site entrance
None of these actions in any way insure that your images will not be taken online. As Delane noted "if you put it on the internet it can be stolen." These actions do, however, solidify your case for willful infringement if it ever gets that far.

| ->> I don't think it's all black and white. Yes of course IPTC is gone when you use save for web. But I usually put it back with Photo Mechanic after I save for web, which I usually don't anyway. Size doesn't increase that much, but you do have double work. |

| ->> Yes, sRGB is best for web viewing also for most of the online print services like EZ prints or printroom etc. |

->> as others have said, sRGB for images destined for the web.
Even if you embedded an ICC profile (say Adobe RGB), most web browsers will ignore it since most are not color-aware (the exception being some of the mac browsers, but to ensure the broadest compatibility stick w/sRGB).
Adding in ITPC info shouldn't added anything significant to the file size of the image (less than 1 KB in most cases). FWIW I add in ITPC info as one of the last steps in my Photoshop actions that resize images down to web friendly sizes (which also includes watermarking the image w/my copyright info among other things) |
