Copying locked/tagged photos from server

->> This is more of an IT question than a photo question but I thought somebody might know:
We got a new RAID server setup at work. Using my Mac (OSX.4), I can put my raw photos on it but can't copy them off later because the folders contain files that I had locked using the lock button on my D2H. Dragging these locked files off the old server was no problem. I can unlock them and drag them off but I want to preserve the locked state as they show up as tagged in photomechanic which is pretty helpful when editing.
I thought it was some sort of permissions problem but the IT do not know what the problem is and their sollution seems to be "don't lock your photos," which really wasn't what I wanted to hear. |

->> From seeing the same situation on my files, (but not digging in at the OS level) I think the lock is actually setting the file-system lock on the files only on the card. Photo Mechanic maintains that flag, as it should, when it ingests the file.
Once they've been copied, if you own the containing folder you should be able to move the files whether they're locked or not. If the folder isn't owned by you, or if you're not a member of the owning group, then you will run into the problem you're seeing because you don't have permission to change the *folder* which contains the files. That trips me up several times a year.
And, this sort of problem occurs most often if you're using a group folder that is owned by someone... say a boss or editor or someone who aggregates the images. I run into it on one of our Macs here because I'll log into one, then ssh over to another and log in there, build some folder, then forget, and copy the files to that folder from the Finder. Because the ownership # number is different the systems get pissy and then I get pissy. |
