| ->> Has anyone heard if there is a difference in the Aperture Adademic version and the standard version of Aperture? I have heard you can't get a paid upgrade to the next version when it is released, you must purchase a new copy. Other than that I have heard of no other difference in the software. Has anyone else heard anything different? |

->> There is no difference.
Also...
"I have heard you can't get a paid upgrade to the next version when it is released, you must purchase a new copy",
that would be something new from Apple; it's never been that way before
If you have questions, call Apple and ask them |

| ->> For those of you looking into Aperture, speaking of academics, if you are looking to purchase it do it under Education on the website. The discount is crazy, I believe it is 499 for normal people, but if you are a "student, faculty, staff member" you can get it for like 250.00. |

->> Ryan, my version of Aperture was $149 (at the Univerity of Pennylvania).
David, I don't see any advantage to using Aperture either. Sure, it looks cool (loupe, interface, stacks), but it doesn't do anything (worth $499) that I can't already do with Photo Mechanic + Photoshop.
For the $149 academic price, it's a good deal because of the book features, and the slick web galleries. But if I had paid $499 for it I would be one of those people with gripes and complaints.
There is a new review here:
http://www.macworld.com/2005/12/reviews/aperture/index.php
and MacWorld is reporting the lowest regular price as $431.05

->> FWIW, Aperture 1.0.1 is out. Fixes some of the few bugs and one nagging performance issue.
Academic products are discounted for students, usually the upgrades are the same. Major upgrades change your app's splash screen from "academic" to normal, there is usually no difference other than that. Sadly for the students, upgrades usually are the same price across the board, no discounts. But you're fully legal and have a full version of the product.
Aperture is faster for picking images and more elegant than PM, but comparing the programs is like apples to oranges (semi-pun intended). They do different things, and both have specific strengths. |
