Stanford Maples Pavillion

->> Hey there,
We're traveling in late November to the Maples Pavillion @ Stanford University for Cal Poly Vs. the Cardinals. I contacted their media department within Athletics, and I got a pretty canned response along the lines of "The Associated Press, San Jose Mercury News, and our photographers have permanantly installed strobes, we do not allow anyone else to use strobes in our facility, nor do we allow overhead of remotes to be mounted on the basket".
Well, thanks guys.
I think that's pretty weak, considering we're the major market paper from San Luis Obispo... we don't get the chance to travel to many away games, especially ones where facilities can handle strobes (our arena has no overhead catwalk).
So the question is, has anyone had any luck lately at Stanford? Am I barking up the wrong tree, should I be talking to their media relations dept.?
Furthermore: any San Jose Mercury News guys... we're all Knight Ridder here -- do you know if you guys are shooting this one? |

->> Hey Nick - their policy is their policy is their policy. They limit the catwalks to three sets of strobes, and that's that. We're lucky enough to have a set up there.
Just so you know, when the "major market papers" from LA, Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, etc... make their way down here they also won't have access to or be able to install strobes so don't take it personally.
The light isn't as bad as you think - it's not good, but it's not horribly bad - iso 800 or 1000 at 1/500th. For newspapers it's just fine. Not sure if we'll be at that game yet, it's a holiday weekend so we don't have as many people working as we normally do. And the floor is no longer bouncy - they put in a new floor last year. I'm happy to answer any more questions you have by email if you like - nmeyer@mercurynews.com. |

->> Hi, I'm shooting at the Men's Volleyball Final Four at Stanford in May, and my magazine wants strobes. Nhat, do you know if the strobe restriction is still in effect? If so, is Maples well lit enough for a 1D mark IV?
Thanks for your help! |

->> The NCAA dictates who has use of strobes for NCAA Championships. Usually limited to 3 pool sets with a priority of who gets to use them. You will have to apply for use of strobes via NCAA Communications Director for that championship.
In order to host the championship, they would have had to agree to that in the bid process. |
