Captioning for RAW images

->> I am wondering what workflow people are using to caption their developed RAW images.
Currently, I shoot an event in RAW + Small jpg then download/caption using PhotoMechanic. I will open the RAW images in CaptureOne and develop selects to a folder. The problem is that CaptureOne doesn't seem to read the IPTC header (although it gives you an option to caption the files in CaptureOne). Do I need to caption the files as they are downloaded, then batch caption them again in CaptureOne in order to get the captions into the developed RAW files? Seems like another step which adds more time to my workflow.
Just wondering if anyone here deals with this better?

| ->> I had the same problem with Canon's DPP software. To solve the problem I switched to using PhotoShop's built in RAW converter. While the conversion quality is not as good as DPP or C1, the ability to maintain caption info is a help when working on deadline. |

->> I share your disappointment with how some raw converters seem to ignore embedded captions. C1 and DPP in particular for me. However, I generally prefer those over Photoshop's raw plug-in and tolerate the inconvenience in exchange for what I feel are nicer results.
Workflow depends on the situation. If it's not time critical, I'll leave the captioning until after converting the raw files (I use Photo Mechanic for captioning and it will pair raw & jpeg files allowing for idential captioning for both). If it's a deadline situation, I will batch caption during ingest or add a generic caption only to a specific file by applying from stationery and then filling in the necessary details. In such situations, I tend to shoot raw and large jpeg and will ftp the jpeg file to the client, usually as shot. At least in my situation, someone on the other end will do the fine tuning to the images. If later I go back to some of those specifically captioned raw files and make conversions, I'll either copy the caption info and paste to the new files or save the IPTC fields to disk and reapply them to the new files.
I'm not sure why C1 and DPP can't carry over the IPTC info during conversion... it's one of the few improvements I'd like to see added to both apps. |

->> Nikon Capture is also unable to read Photo Mechanic's captions. (also frustrating)
Because Apple's Aperture is suppose to be an importer, browser, caption writer, batch processor and RAW image adjuster, it SHOULD have no problem with this. This will be one of the first things I'll look at when I export my first Aperture photo to PhotoShop. |

->> Ron,
Thank you for you comments - looks like we have very similar workflows.
Tuomo... are you saying that Downloader Pro is going to help me with my problem or just to download it and use it instead of PhotoMechanic? My issue is not the ability to caption images while downloading as PhotoMechanic will caption the RAW and Jpg file but C1Pro won't read the IPTC header. If anything, like Ron mentioned, it is a problem with C1's software, not PhotoMechanic. I have been processing my RAW files into Tiffs or Jpgs for my clients, then captioning them in PhotoMechanic. Kind of a waste of time because one of the best features of PM is that you can caption while downloading!
I guess all I can do for now is wait for the next version of C1Pro to read IPTC headers. I'll send them a suggestion.

->> Pablo,
Take a look at the preview article for Photo Mechanic 4.4 at robgalbraith.com. It looks like 4.4 will allow transfer of IPTC info from RAW to JPEG and vice versa. If it works as indicated, it could be a significant time saver.
Some other cool features in PM 4.4 as well... |

->> Just to update, I tried the Beta version of PhotoMechanic and it looks like they have addressed the RAW captioning issue. Now when you caption a RAW+JPG file it applies the caption to both files as C1Pro now recognizes the captions applied in PM.
This will be a significant time-saver for me (and likely many others). RAW workflow just got easier!
