->> Hey all,
I was at an event last night when the shutter on my Mark II blew... I've had it just over a year... Not sure how many images have been shot with it, maybe 30,000 to 50,000 if that... how many people have had similar experiences with Mark II shutters going before their time? I'm bringing the camera to Canon ASAP for repairs. Any advice/comments? |

->> Michael,
IF you're a CPS member you can call your area rep. (chicago contact, might be able to point you in the right direction. Brian Matsumoto, bmatsumoto@cusa.canon.com)
One of the other chicago suburban papers had a string of these on their MKII's. got to Bill Manley's Page and e-mail him

->> Shaun,
Thanks for the tip. Brian directed me to the New Jersey repair center and Bill shared his tale of woe. Both very helpful.
However, I offer this comment/question to the board: after meandering through Brooklyn/Staten Island and Central New Jersey traffic for two hours, I arrived at the Jamesburg facility after closing, only to drive all the way back to Long Island with my bum Mark II still in the box in the passenger seat.
Oh well, at least I was able to see some softer sides of the Garden State (Jamesburg is billed as Historic, according to the sign welcoming listless photographers to town) and buy relatively cheap gasoline without having to pump myself.
But, with time becoming a factor and work hours booked for the next week solid, I think I'm going to ship it over to them (FedEx or UPS) tomorrow. How should I package the camera, and what documentation should be included?
Thank you for your help.
SIncerely,
Michael Sisak |

->> Michael,
I had my shutter also go bad on the 1d mk2. It was 10 days after the warranty and around 30,000 shots. I sent it to Canon and they fixed it under warranty.
I sent mine US mail and packaged it myself with a lot of bubble wrap. I completed the form that you can find on Canon's website and mailed it overnight to them. Once you get an email from Canon, you can track the progress. I got it back in 10 working days.
Good luck!! |

->> Boy Mark, do we ever have similar stories. I'm from Centereach and the shutter blew on my mk2 a week before heading to Bristol, CT to do the 10 day LLB East Regional Tournament. I did the same thing. Loaded the Pathfinder and headed to Jamesburg. Fortunately, they were open, took my camera and put me in the system at the top of the que (Q?, cue?). Time was of essence and it was going to be real close.
Well, the folks at Canon were great. Had the shutter fixed and Fed Ex'd back to me within 4 days! The camera had 70K actuations and was fully covered. They even picked up the tab on the overnight delivery. Hope you have a similar experience in dealing with them. From what I have heard, the shutter on the mk2 doesn't hold up like it does on the 1D. That thing is a beast.
Best of luck and let me know how it turns out. |

->> Thanks for the replys.
Paul, where can I find that form? I went to Canon's website, but their support site doesn't seem to allow a "repair request" for the Mark II or any of the other pro-style Digital SLRs. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
Sincerely,

->> My MK II shutter blew out at about 13-14 months old and about 50000 frames as well. No warranty coverage for me no matter how hard I tried---I even had it removed by a manager from my credit card account once, then put back on the day it shipped. I have been arguing since, but it did come back in working order and ended up costing $305.00. My 1d mkI is at 150000 frames or something and still going though, so I am not sure if we are just a few of the unlucky or what.

->> Update...
Shipped the camera to Canon with a letter of explanation and warranty information, got the automated e-mail back giving me an estimate for repair... about $232.
I don't mind paying for the repairs (the shutter broke a month out of warranty), but since this problem has seemed so pervasive and Canon has been willing to cover repair under warranty in the past, how can I convince them to maybe help me out here, too.
Any suggestions or contacts I could write/talk to would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Sisak |

| ->> write a nice friendly letter to CPS in NJ - and according to my experience they might very well be willing to do repair it under warranty. |

| ->> My way-out-of-warranty MKII shutter went down a couple weeks ago at the Cowboy game. Fortunately it was at the end of the game. I Fed Ex'd the camera on Monday and the next Monday the camera was back in my hands with no charge. They cleaned the sensor and upgraded the firmware. What can CPS do for you? |

->> I had the same situation right now. My markII died in the 4th quarter of this weekends Texas Tech vs Oklahoma game. Fortunately my backup a 1V which hadn't fired a frame in over a year worked like a champ. I'm only a few months out of warranty, so hopefully I can get the same great service.
And thanks to all those in the equipment q and a section that helped me out with this. |

| ->> Just an update to this thread, I got my mk2 back in 1 week from cps and they replaced my shutter at no charge. Kudos to cps for getting it back to me so quickly when during their 1 week turn around was the thanksgiving holiday. |

| ->> Same thing happened to me last year. I had about 40k actuations and the shutter exploded into the chip. They wanted 850 bucks and they didn't want to do it under warranty. After four or five phone calls and an email with my clients listed they did it for free. It was a pretty lame experience. |

| ->> How can you tell how many actuations the mmk2 has on it? My shutter is stutttering so I think I need to take it in. But I would like to know how many "miles" I have on it..... |
