The two applications serve different purposes.
Photomechanic is more of a photo browser - capable of sorting, captioning, cropping and sending images off to their ultimate destination on a tight deadline. Other applications that might fit into this category include BreezeBrowser and FotoStation.
DPP is geared more specifically towards post production - browsing a shoot, raw conversion, jpeg toning and batch conversions. Other programs similar to this include Capture One, Adobe Camera Raw and Pixmantec Raw Shooter.
To answer your original question... I believe Photomechanic excels in its niche. Particulary in comparison to Canon's browsing software.

->> I only use the Canon apps to change settings on my camera. Other than that, I use PhotoMechanic and Photoshop.
