->> While investigating deaths among pulitzer finalists in photography I came across an article on a group of fearless South African photojournalists known as The Bang-Bang Club.
Has anyone read the book co-authored by Greg Marinovich and Joao Silva?
Can anyone tell me what has happened to these two gentlemen? I know a little about what happened to Kevin Carter. |

->> you can buy the book, The Bang Bang Club,Snapshots from a hidden war, written by Marinovich and Silva. Available at most bookstores or Amazon.com. A good read, pretty powerful stuff. As far as I know, both still are in involved in photography, Marinovich is also documentary filmmaker.

| ->> I'm reading it right now. Near the end. Very good book. Gives an awesome glimpse in to what its like to work in situation like that. Hard to believe they did it for nearly four years. It's also a good way to learn some history. I would definitely recommend it. |

| ->> I will do that friday. The little tibbits I discover on the internet on these guys the more I wonder what happened to their lives. Certainly there is a movie here and I haven't even read the book. |

->> I need to read this book. I was assigned to photograph land management in South Africa in 2004 and couldn't believe the situation I was working in.
On my flight out, I grabbed a National Geographic because the cover was about my home state of Nebraska. Inside was an article about the 10-year anniversary of the end of apartheid. It got me thinking about the reality of shooting in such a country.
The reporter and I went to shoot in the squatter settlement near Benoni, South Africa (where Charlize Theron is from for all you fans). Tens of thousands of people just squatted on this guy's farm land and although the government agreed that they shouldn't be there, they wouldn't remove them because it would look bad.
This was the first assignment we needed to take an armed guard with us. I took only half my gear just in case it was all taken from me because I had more to shoot in that country and needed to go do an assignment in Botswana for a couple weeks after that. Luckily he kept everything under control (language helped).
It is an amazing place to shoot in but even after shooting in the worst parts of Washington, DC, South Africa takes the cake as a VERY dangerous place to shoot. |

->> There are many journalists who risk their lives for truth.
The Committee to Protect Journalists also list those missing and killed doing their jobs throughout the world. They also list governments who target journalists.
