setting up a photo dept

->> Recently a client with no art/photo dept has asked me to consult/assist them in setting up an in house photo dept. They will be hiring a photo editor in the future but in the mean time they want to set a system that allows them to view, add comments, use the images themselves in powerpoint presentations for advertisers and mark shots that they want the photo editor to reference to for future use in adverts, dvd boxes, newspaper ads, posters etc etc

I'm shooting raw/small jpeg and delivering about 10,000 images at the end of the project on Cd & DVD.

In house they use a combo of PC & Mac so viewing systems must be compatible.

Right now I'm leaning towards a multiple licence of PhotoMechanic and maybe adobe photoshop lite for the people that need to view the images.

For the editors out there......if you were were starting from scratch.....what software/hardware/storage options would you go to?

Chris

->> Extensis Portfolio or Canto Cumulus are what they need.

Photo Mechanic is okay and it could compliment the two, but the other two products are expressly intended for DAM (Digital Asset Management).

At MLB Photos we have a big server. We use Portfolio to catalog and retrieve everything. It works very well.

One obvious caveat: in order for Extensis Portfolio to do its' magic, the images must be captioned and keyworded well.

->> I think the combo of Photo Mechanic and Portfolio is great. You start the process off by injesting, adding captions and keywords with PM, and then you archive it via Portfolio.

There is a thread on Galbraith in the PM section, where a user has given a detailed description of how he uses PM, Portfolio and DVDs to archive and retreive his images. It is very informative and detailed workflow description.
